Yes.
As to the whole musicians not being paid:
I'm not gonna sit around and speculate, but for one most great and popular artists are fucking insane. They have warped views of reality. They think they're the most important shit, but also say how it's all a collective blah blah. I've always held that to be a great musician you have to be a fucking egomaniac. Being an egomaniac is often counterintuitive to our little subculture here.
Seriously though, I bet bands were tired of getting promises that never delivered. Watch Festival Express. It gives a pretty interesting view point. It IS their fucking career, and if they don't get paid they're fucked. Especially then when they weren't exactly the legends they are now. Sure they were stars, but they didn't have legendary status.

exactly. regardless of how we choose to idealize the 60's, there were no gods in existence then, just as there are none now. musicians played because they love music, yes, but also because they can make money doing it. its not sacrilidge, or selling out, its fucking reality. gotta just love it for what it is... excellent fucking music. nothing more, nothing less.
i give huuuge props to bob weir in festival express, when all the fucking whiny hippies want in for free and he defends the security and concert promoters, saying they are the ones getting their heads busted and putting their asses on the line to provide a cool experience.. and the freeloaders just can't seem to wrap their minds around that.

Not surprising at all, in fact Im surprised this needs to be pointed out. The festival promoters were of course in it for the money, and the bands well the bands are like all bands. People have some idealized version of the past, though if you talk to people were alive during that time they will set you straight. My dad went to UCLA in the mid to late 60's and has explained to me how utterly different the reality was to how its imagined now.
Look at John Lennon
If you are looking for someone to be rich and sit around on heroin all day in an expensive hotel room and promote peace, well he's your man. He didn't know (or probably care) how to actually get peace, however he was quite good at being on heroin for peace
