Noobopilus ID Request--Mulch Mushrooms
    #11170171 - 10/02/09 02:19 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hi all, I'm going to noob it up with this question for sure.  I don't have much info on these shrooms and the pics stink.

Habitat:
Mulch around trees.  Gregarious but dense in some spots.

Gills:
Very dark with white edges.

Stem:
Only a few inches at most--short stems.

Cap:
tawny brown--some had the characteristic "zoning" of some pans.  Rain complicated things.  inch in diameter.

Spore print color:
Black.

Bruising:
Turned much lighter while drying.

Other information:
Sweet smell.

Thanks, if not, just call me a noob.

Looks like Panaelous cinctulus to me. if not cinctulus then something panaelous, nice find, you could use a lil work on your confidence though  your pictures were fine, and your description was fine, imo.

There's a lot of 'em out there.  Wondering if they're worth it.  Something tells they're not Cincts, although I have nothing to back that up.

well, normaly cintcs grow in well fertilized pastures or sometimes in front lawns, this is in mulch apparently.  Normaly they wldnt grow but that doesnt meen its impossible, simply improbable. Mulch sometimes has fertilizers mixed in with it while its being made, so you never really know.

I think they're a Psathyrella species.

Thanks.  Any more opinions are obviously welcome.

I'm headed out and on the way back I'll see if I can get a closer look at everything growing out there.

Those are definitely Psathyrella, as Danny said.
