Cut The Cap for Bigger Shrooms?
    #1116204 - 12/06/02 01:09 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

This is an odd question, but Swim has a casing that has two very large shrooms, one is 13 inches, the other 8 inches in length... He noticed both of the caps are sort of deformed, almost as if they had been cut down the middle. I was wondering if anyone might have any thoughts regarding improving the size of the shrooms by cutting open the caps (about a day before harvest)..

I doubt if the relation is as you think it is. It is more likely the caps split from growing large in the presence of lower than optimal humidity.

You could try it though and see. Sometimes the strangest ideas yield very interesting discoveries.

I used to notice splits in the golden teachers i used to grow. a bit like a mushroom version of a hair lip.

There would be a small groove running all the way up the stem to the cap which would develop a split where the groove met the cap. I'm not sure if this is what you are talking about or not.

I haven't noticed this on the Ecuadors i now grow though, so i think it was some sort of genetic deformity in the golden teachers i had. What type of shrooms are they?

that sounds more like a mutation than a split cap

Mr.Wobble.. you are correct as the tear goes down the stem, in both of the very large shrooms.. here is a pic of the bigger one, its a monster.

Yeah that's what mine were like, although they weren't that big. Spore print them and see how they grow out.

I'm sure it's some genetic thing. Although there might be and easier explanation. What that is i don't know. Lovely shrooms though. What type are they?

I just did my first casing.  I normally grow brf cakes.  I crubled two of them into Westlands organic peat and woodbark compost, 50/50 with verm.  It's colonising nicely.  I thought i'd start of simple and work my way up onto other substrates and casings.

Shrooms that size, really peak my interest though.

When you say poo, what sort?  What do you innoculate the poo/straw mix with?  Do you use the spores direct or do you get them to grow on something else first?

In reply to:

Swim innoculated 3 quart size millet jars with a syringe. The jars had filter disks to promote air exchange. After jars were colonized, he purchased a recntangular brick of precut straw at Michael's for $5.00. He then pasturized the poo and straw, let cool, and then layered colonized millet between the straw/poo.

In reply to:

Swim made sure to compact the straw/poo as best he could to prevent contamination. The depth was approx. 6.5 inches. After colonization of straw/poo, he applied a casing layer of approx 1.5-2 inches in depth. Colonization of the casing layer took 2 weeks, pins started forming in the third, and fruits developed shortly thereafter.

Here is a grow log of the casing. The shroom posted above came out of the second flush, pictures on the grow log are from the first.
