Slow colonization with Koi Samui (Ralph's SOTM Sept.)?
    #11163566 - 10/01/09 12:21 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

A week and a half ago I inoculated 5 quart jars of grain and 6 BRF jars with Ralph's Koi Samui.  At the same time I inoculated 6 BRF jars with cube Blue Meanie (also from Ralph).  The blues have taken off and are well on their way at this point, but I have yet to see even a smidgen of growth from the KS in a single one of the jars.  Before I contact Ralph about a dud syringe (yes I know it's early, but I've never had any jar take more than a week to show signs of life), did anyone else who got the KS as a SOTM extra have a similar experience?  Is it just a slow colonizer in general?

I know, patience.  I'm just covering my bases and getting information.

No one has done anything with the KS from Ralph?  I'm looking for all kinds of experiences so I know how normal/abnormal my experience is.  Please?

Genetics has a key to p.lay.  Sometimes it can take upto a month to show growth, this doesnt happen often but it does.  Who knows maybe the syringe is a dud?  I would wait another week to contact the vendor if you still see no growth.  I am sure he will be happy to send you a replacement syringe.  This shit happens.  GL with the blu meanies.

I have some Koh Samui jars going right now and they are taking their time. They are on day 29 and only about 50% colonized. The spores did not come from ralphster's, so maybe it's just a slow strain. This is my first time growing them.

Thanks guys.  Metalshroom, PM me when your WBS starts to show signs of life.  I'm interested in what your results are.

The blue meanies prefer a cooler temperature for optimum growth, 65-72f. The kou Thai samui is from a tropical region so wait 14 days before questioning them.

It's a awesome science.

I have some info on this but it's not conclusive.  I knocked up 2 groups of spawn bags with 2 syringes from Ralph, Koh Samui & Cambodian.  The only problem is that I lost my notes on which syringe was used for which group of bags.  Anyway one group had explosive growth and fully colonized the bags in under 2 weeks.  The other group (from the other syringe) has had very slow and weak growth and in 2 weeks aren't even at 30% and ready for shaking, and I'm concerned that they might never finish at all.

So the moral of the story:  I used 2 syringes from Ralph, Koh Samui & Cambodian, one was excellent and other was very disappointing, but I can't be sure which is which.

If anyone has already harvested the koh samui, how is it?
