How do you know that you know?
    #11169033 - 10/02/09 12:23 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I'm genuinely curious if anyone can answer the title's question.  I see a lot of people here slinging that word around, so one of them ought to see this as an opportunity to set the record straight.  It doesn't matter what they know, I would just like to be told how they know that they know what they do. Any takers?

Trial and error usually. I just try to test what I think I know, each time I get the chance. Even if that thing turns out to be true though, there might be things that you don't know about it.

All this time I've loved you
And never known your face
All this time I've missed you
And searched this human race
Here is true peace
Here my heart knows calm
Safe in your soul
Bathed in your sighs

Once must know that one knows that one knows.  Knowing one knows is not enough.  No?

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Knowing some object i suppose implies observing what it appears to be, observing its behaviour, observing its uselfullness, putting letters & sounds to it, then we think we 'know' it

We can know billions of objects, but if we don't know who it is that observes & knows all these objects, what kind of foundation is knowledge of objects based?

What isit that even observes objects in the first place?

Another object?

:peace:

Gee, how many great inventions from those that (claimed to) know the self?

How many great inventions from those who studied objects?

If your concerned with inventions then you have a point...

I see that anything i invent will eventually be destroyed so im not that stressed bout it

Of course i enjoy inventions, but im only enjoying mySelf

My iPod, is also my Self, as is my car, my tv......can any of it be outside me?

:peace:

Instead of making contributions to mankind that we all can enjoy, we can contemplate ourselves in endless meditation. Hmmm, which is the selfish choice?

Your view is influenced by the world you see

I dont mean this condescendingly, its just obviously a fact

Your concerned with gain, contribution, invention etc... all these things will be lost so i say let them go, they will still come to you...

If there is any real contribution to a turbulent world it is not of another object but of peace & true lasting happyness, not happyness that can be a 'fad' or a passing pleasure, but real consistent happyness, untouchable happyness

If you look at inventions they pass with time, the Sages words are here til the end

By the way, i have a job, i have friends & family, i enjoy many many activities, im not sitting in a corner with my eyes shut, this is real freedom not hiding from life in any way

Like your really hearing me out though, right?

:peace:

OK.

And apparently your view is influenced by an unseen world. There is a name for this.

I like the scientific approach to knowing, which is well articulated by Feynman:

Quote:

Some people say, "How can you live without knowing?" I do not know what they mean. I always live without knowing. That is easy. How you get to know is what I want to know.

Quote:

I can live with doubt, and uncertainty, and not knowing. I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. I have approximate answers, and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and in many things I don’t know anything about, such as whether it means anything to ask why we’re here, and what the question might mean. I might think about a little, but if I can’t figure it out, then I go to something else. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without having any purpose, which is the way it really is, as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn’t frighten me.

An unseen 'world' would be imaginary

There is no unseen 'world', there is just the Self, it is totally seeable

It is seen in everything, but As nothing

"How do you know that you know?"

Based on an association between my thoughts and feelings.

You dont know.
No one does..

But if we didnt go around saying that we do... nobody would have the desire to challenge our self proclaimed knowledge ..
... and you would've never came up with this thread either..
its like we all have this built in desire to make things correct.. to get closer to the truth..
so we fight about what believe to be true / what we claim to know.
Its a process that brings dynamics to the refinement of our collective 'knowledge'.

... and of course.. it crosses my mind that you have the same question even reading this reply..
does he really believe what hes saying ?
how does he know that he knows  what he just said ?

it becomes very easy to go ahead and assume that from your point of view , the only thing we can know - is that we dont know.
but how do we know that we know that we dont know ?
we dont... thats why we act like we know.
the paradox is too fucked up to handle...and would leave us unambitious to receive new information , sitting plagued with thoughts of doubt caused by the inevitable relativity of truth.

so we enthusiastically fabricate it into a seemingly truthful product.. and kindly ask the crowd if they wish to buy it : "Any takers?"
