Late Night Physics
    #11167134 - 10/01/09 11:12 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Anyone good at physics?  I would understand this problem except that I'm not sure if I need to factor in Centripetal force.

#47) A skier starts from rest at the top of a hill.  The skier coasts down this hill and up another hill.  The crest of the second hill is circular, with a radius of r=36m.  Neglect friction and air resistance.  What must be the height of the first hill so that the skier just loses contact with the snow at the crest of the second hill?

-If the 36m radius = height of the hill I have to worry about I can probably figure this out using PE and KE, since he has no KE at the start.  But not sure if this is whats up.    Anyone know?

Easy. The skier is never "in contact" with the snow, seeing as how the magnetic forces at the atomic level do not allow the molecules of the skies and snow to every truly contact each other.

Or the skier and snow exist in infinite parallel universes with infinite systems of measurement and therefore the question is irrelevant.

Without the weight of the skier the question is dubious.

I am trying. A skier with a weight of X will travel farther up the second hill than a skier with a weight of X minus ten pounds.

weight isn't gonna matter, M will cancel out as we can set final energy = initial energy.

What a stupid question for physics if some of the things that help "apply the laws of physics" are removed.

Hang the fucker that came up with this shit.

Right the masses cancel out.

I dont think you need centripetal force.  As I am reading it there is no circular motion and no centripetal force.  (hes going on the top of a hill right, not around the inside of a loop).  I think you are on the right track with conservation of energy.

Re-reading the question I see what you mean. All ties in with the PE and rad.

Hmmmm....

so is radius the height of the hill?  The picture does not make it look like that :frown:

Man, I have personally experienced this phenomenon rolling marbles.
I'd say maybe about a quarter less he height of the other hill, somewhere around there. Sorry I didn't help, but I definitely can relate to the question in some ways.

If you get the answer and convert it to inches, I may be able to replicate it. (using marbles)

alright well I never got that one, here is another one I couldn't get.

57) A 63kg skier coasts up a snow covered hill that makes an angle of 25 degrees with the horizontal.  The initial speed of the skier is 6.6 m/s.  After coasting 1.9m up the slope, the skier has a speed of 4.4 m/s.

a) find the work done by kinetic frictional force that acts on the skis.
b) What is the magnitude of the kinetic frictional force.

gonna go to bed, il check when i get up before i go to class and see if I'm lucky.
