Any dead give aways?
    #11167677 - 10/02/09 02:50 AM (8 years, 22 days ago)

SWIM's pretty inexperienced, and pretty young. SWIM started college this fall, and SWIM is constantly see mushrooms growing in little nooks of campus. (would be unnoticeable to some one not looking). SWIM has ate mushrooms 2 times before, and these are pretty similar. The only difference is that the caps are MUCH larger, and the stem is slightly thicker. SWIM told his cousin from NC about this, and he said "Yea man, be cautious, but I think you have something there. Ohio is loaded with wild growing psilocybin containing mushrooms."

SWIM's brother said, "I have had mushrooms with large caps before, and I'm alive."

SWIM said the shrooms grow in mulch/fertalizer where campus foliage grows. He said when they grow old and sort of fall apart, new ones grow pretty shortly there after. I haven't looked at them up close(haven't picked them). But, from about 4 feet away, they lookvery similar to actual magic mushrooms, pearly white-ish, with a very small amount of grey. They just have a large cap. I know there are multiple types, and some that look like they may be a type of psilocybin shrooms, but are actually nothing, or poisonous, but thats's about all I know.

So, are there any dead give aways to identify them? Is there any site you would recommend that would maybe show the types of shrooms that grow wild in Northeast Ohio... SWIM keeps bothering me.  lol

Your best bet with your experience right now is to grab some, take photos, learn all you can about what to look for, and do NOT eat them until you get 100% confirmation. All it takes is one and you will be tripping in the afterlife. Forever. :P

Read, read, read, learn, learn, learn.

Thank you very much.

They look similar to Psilocybe caerulipes

But, they're a little whiter. Swim will pick them, take some pictures, and look further into them.

Thanks again

Well, the good news is that you're in the right place.

The bad news would would require a long lecture on the dangers of eating wild mushrooms, but suffice to say that if SWIM keeps up this (for lack of a better word) idiotic behavior, SWIM et al could very well end up with, at best, a day that includes some vomiting; at worst, a significantly shortened life span.

A few pieces of advice before you even think about eating another wild mushroom:

1. Take pics and post a proper ID request here.
2. Only when you have a positive ID from a Trusted Identifier (TI) can you eat them.
3. Assuming that you don't know what a proper ID request and TI are, read the two links in my signature.

Welcome to the Shroomery!

Don't worry, although SWIM's brother's quote sounded reckless, he is actually very experienced and knowledgeable, he's just always busy. SWIM hasn't had any of the UN-ID'd shrooms, and he doesn't plan to, unless he is 3,291% sure that they are legit.
