I have some oak logs, I'm just gonna bust up with a hatchet and an axe. Does the wood have to be in really small pieces?

if you have wood.......... and you have not chopped it yet i would venture to say you have a chain saw.......

if so use it to cut the log so that its laying on the ground on top of a tarp. and saw from the side..........not like you were cutting a new log from the tree but like you were splitting it in half. it takes a bit to get the hang of it but the saw cuttings come out 1-2 inch long that way. works for me ...........they can get so long it might clog up the discharge so once you find the sweet spot go easy to keep from clogging

do not know yet but wbs works

i got a sack of pure wood which i put a full jar of lc on 1 month ago with no signs yet. of anything ......myco or contam and i pasteurized the chips at 160 for 1.5 hrs.

we will see............first sign of contam and out the door it will go.....

you got a saw or what?

I have a chain-saw yes :laugh:, I'm not too crafty with it so I try not to use the damn thing.

I think what I'm going to do is use your tek for cutting up the pieces.

Sterilize the wood in my PC in jars (with a bit of distilled water).

Use two jars as "masters". In my "masters" jars I'm going to inject a little sterile LC like solution(honey or karo mixed with water) in a select location. Then inject MS onto the LC covered chips.

Hopefully the chips's will colonize, and if/when they do I will (in a still air box) transfer colonized chips with uncolonized(but sterile) chips into trays, and case with some sterile verm. Cover them for a few days or so then uncover them and begin misting a two weeks after.

Crazy that you've been waiting a month and there is no visible sign of growth.

I have been spawing my LC into wbs.. then I am transferring from there into the wood sub.. just did this yesterday. But the wood sub was just pasteurized not pc'd .. I did use some Shiitake plugs to spawn a tray of wood chips and dust.. it took a month to fully colonize, I am about to cold shock it in the next day or two..

this sounds like the best way too!!

i will be doing this in the next few months when i get from agar to an lc then a wbs jar with shit take e from the g store.

also go by weight of the wood then figure 65-75 % of that and weigh out the h20 to put into the jar. that way the h20 content is right


its best to dry the chips as dry as possable like in the oven or something and start there. i just like the have natural life in them to start with and add to it.

or you can steam pasteurize it which is the preferred tek. big pot with rocks in the bottom and water to the level of the rocks. basket with wood in it sitting on top. bring water to boil first set basket on rocks stick thermometer in the middle of wood pile and as soon as you see a rise in temp shut off fire. watch temp try to hold at 170 for 1hr. noodle boil pot works real good or crab pot i have a 80qt crab pot i use.
i just did this yesterday to make logs and it looks good so fare.

Let the wood age for a month or so so it natural anti fungi saps die out. I think Staments recommends it in his cultivation book.

I've been skimming it and I don't see it. But I think it was in the mushroom cultivator. I may be mistaken on were I saw it it might have been here. If you haven't then I would recommend pickin this book up it's just a good reference.

i thought you couln't ply-wood because of the glue in it? also the layers inside aren't necessarily the same as the outside, particlarly on cabinet grade material.
