Hard-wood VS Soft-wood
    #11165467 - 10/01/09 08:14 PM (8 years, 22 days ago)

Is there really a big difference between using hard-wood saw-dust verses soft-wood saw-dust? Also does it matter if the wood has been treated?

I would not use treated wood its treated with chromium copper arsenate. Its cancer causing and has anti fungal properties

Thank you! You just saved me a lot of trouble!

I still want to know if soft-wood is bad compared to hard-wood.

Thanks everyone I think I understand why now haaha. Myc probably doesn't like sap .

Well tommorrow I'm gonna bust up some hard-wood logs with an axe haha. Unless there's an easier way to obtain non-treated hard-wood.

Yeah.. its the sap and anti fungal properties in most soft woods.. plus some are too acidic.

If you can find wood pellet fuel.. thats the cheapest off the shelf bulk type of hardwood sawdust you can find too. Its a few bucks for like a 40lb bag. Wish I had that near me.. But anyway, just pasteurize the pellets, they fall apart into sawdust.. add the wood chips (like suggested above) makes a great hardwood sub. Good luck!

There is more on here if you search, here's another: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6712193#6712193

but I am not sure if there is a clear answer any where..

I haven't worked with a would lover yet, but I do believe you could inoc. aspen pet bedding with your starter grains and then go to wood chips. I read somewhere that oak and hickory are harder then say alder. It will colonize slower but oak and hickory will hold up longer. I am not 100% on that so if that isn't correct please correct me I don't want to put bad info out there.

if you have a to nof wood ready to chop up
i would rent a wood chipper from home depot
chip all of it
that way you will have chips for a long long time
plus it will save you all the time and hassle of doing it by hand

Where does one find these pellets?  And what about a semi hardwood like Baltic birch?  I've got plenty of that for my PA cabs that I build.  The bit of white oak I have is a bastard to cut.

I have always wondered about using Birch.. it is not available where I am now, but I used to be surrounded by it..

Home Depot sells wood pellets if it is something that sells in your area.. I am in So. Florida.. no pellets for me :frown:
