substrate pasteurized 24 hours ago: is it ok still?
    #11165006 - 10/01/09 06:51 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I pasteurize some substrate yesterday evening.

1 brick of coir
1qt of dehydrated poop
500ml of gypsum

I put the materials in a 5gallon bucket and poured boiling water in.  15 min later I looked in and the substrate temp, using a meat thermometer showed 180F degrees.

My problem is I fell asleep shortly after that and have been busy all day upon waking up.

So, its been in the bucket about 24 hours. I am not exactly sure how long it stayed at 180F degrees for proper pasteurization.

Should I just get it to field capacity by draining off any excess moisture, then mix my spawn with it? or, should I do something different

Hi I just finished pasturizing my sub in an oven bag submerged in water at 160 for 90 minutes. How long do I have to wait before I can mix in my spawn?

I ended up using it..  I just wasn't sure if pouring more boiling water in a certain amount of time after pasteurizing started was absolutely necessary or not.  I wanted to check the temp an hour later, but fell asleep.

I did squeeze or a ton of excess moisture before I mixed in my spawn with the bulk substrate.

I only used half of my colonized grain jars.  That way if there are any problems, a months worth of work(waiting) will not be totally wasted.  I will spawn the other half in a week or two when thes4e fully colonize.

The longest I have seen a pasteurized quart jar last was about a week...  The jar used was a combo of coir, verm, gypsum and chicken shit!!
