looks like it is working.. r there any stables for horses around?? do they raise any kinda agriculture product around there??

Well.. there is plenty of horses.. all using green hay products. Agricultural products include citrus, fruits and veggies.. but also includes sugar production. However, not one sugar refinery will work with me since they are trying to turn all the bagasse into ethanol (they are giving it to the state). The few breweries will not respond to my inquiries to haul off their spent grain! All woodworking is soft or compressed wood materials.. this is why I have been high and dry for premium substrate materials.

If you ever run short you should use paper/cardboard. I've gotten good yields off of straight waxed cardboard substrates. I've wondered if a supplement of cardboard on the order of 30-50-70% would lead to better yields, but haven't gotten to test it in comparison to other substrates yet.

That log has paper/cardboard in it as well.. I am going to experiment with what I can get away with and what yields best... This one is 60/30/10-Palm Frond/Paper/Aspen Shavings .. the more palm fronds the better (endless free supply).. I do have two large hefty bags of hand shredded paper/cardboard  to use.. but, again, I have just seen better yields with natural subs.. the best with wheat straw, which is what I am trying to replicate. We'll see.

wow sucks there.. right now u can get all the corn cobs(no kernal)and stalks u want.. 100's of acres. they just let it lay there then bushhog and forget it.. do they recycle alot there?

They do recycle a lot here.. and it does suck here, as I have found. It sucks because I bought all this stuff to set this up.. and can't find a good sub (that would make it all worth while). I thought for sure that wheat straw would be all around.. jokes on me.

good luck with the palm leaves or stems or whatever those are. If you get into grass clippings I'd only use ones from people who don't use chemicals or shit on their lawns.

This high spawn ratio is almost a guarantee of success. 

I bet it would even work with no pasteurization and filthy substrate.

The colonization will be so fast that contams don't have a chance.

Most folks around here are too lazy, poor or cheap to prepare and use so much spawn.

We are trying to get a good yield out of the bulk substrate that is usually either cheap or free.

There's nothing wrong with doing it your way though.

I have lots of spawn, and lots more coming.. 1:1 is an insurance policy that I see as an affordable one, end cost per log is minimal with free bulk. I mean buying filter bags in bulk, breaks down to a few cents per, and I get 12-15 of those ready out of one 20lb bag of WBS (also very cheap). I see the total process, not using dirty sub (I see what you are saying), but going through the steps and the 1:1 as necessary to achieve optimal results for my sub par substrate (which actually may not be as crappy as I figured). I am however doing more logs right now with a broader ratio, to see where I can push it..

got a suggestion. i am from Louisiana and i have wanted to return to get some water Hyacinth. i bet you got a lot of it around. that and a shredder would work great i think.

if you test it let me know how it goes. i am interested in this.

I have seen it sparsely in the Everglades National Park, I think I have seen more up in the central section. But it's funny you mention that.. I got some Enoki to colonize some random dried flowers.. but the humidity made it all fall apart. I was trying to get it to grow on the heads still on the stem..lol.

I just did a search for info on that stuff.. I guess it is supposedly everywhere, and the state wants it dead. I also saw the dried stuff being turned into furniture.. interesting. I will keep an eye out, and grab some one day.

It is a great plant for filtering water in sewage lagoons.  IT grows very rapidly and has to be removed constantly.  Maybe you could get someone to pay you to take it.

It has been tested as a substrate (for oysters, as I recall) and was very successful.  My guess is that it would have significant nitrogen content and so could be spawned at a very low rate.

yeah that's pretty cool. Plus, I have seen the boats they use to scoop out the plant life from the canals.. they dump it on the bank in intervals. Then a truck comes and gets it. If I could time it with the state removal, I could just grab the pile. I will check it out.

Seriously though, this is something you should be talking with your state agricultural extension office about.  You may get some help....cash or otherwise.
