Woohoo!! It worked!
    #1116424 - 12/06/02 06:21 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Holy CRAP! It worked!! It finally worked! Take a look for yourself...my first flush of PES Hawaiian. This is 1.5 PF cakes with 50/50+ cased on 11/11. Two things I did wrong; Didnt crumble the cakes, i cut them into slices, and I made the casing layers WAY too thick. Next up is Pink Buffalos on poo. Thanks for all your unknowing help!

i slice cakes.

anyone have the reasoning behind crumbling for casings? has this already be discussed to death?

my reason for slicing instead of crumbling is purely theorectical: i feel the sliced mycelium doesn't take as much time and nutrients "healing" itself before fruiting. i slice two large pieces, put them side-by-side, break off nice chunks to fill the holes and then put on the casing layer.

opinions?

My understanding is that a crumbled cake provides more innoculation points and therefore speeding the colonization of the casing. I just crumbled the pink buffalos in the poo and returned them to the incubator, so we shall see what the difference is.

As far as eating them? Not today, but they are drying nicely now. I made a print from that monster cap. Ive only taken the "amazon" strain. I dunno if thats what it really is, but its what you get from PF if you dont get the Hawaiian. Can anyone describe what the differences might be? I hear they are more potent.

i believe "inoculation points" refers to the locations where the substrate is injected with spores, but i think i understand what you're saying: crumbling creates more exposed and bumpy mycelium surface area. that may be a benefit. anyone have other reasons? lots of people do it, there must be more.

innoculation points can also refer to places where spawn is used in bulk substrate, you would crumble a cake when you want more innoculation points. when you are simply casing a pf cake and not using it as spawn, it would make sense to do as little damage to mycelium network as possible so it can recover and you can get onto the 1st flush. crumbling bruises way more than slicing, i have crumbled pf cakes and cased them, they take incredibly long time for the first pinset i think. also most people using pf cakes as spawn use cheese graters to break them up, i hear it works quite nifty. btw, impressive flush!

Bilge, I agree with you 100% on this. i dunk first then i slice and then fill in the holes with substrate cement(small pieces mixed with water). I think with crumbling you will have a more even pinset but it will take longer to get there. leaving the myc network intact definitely saves on recovery time. another thing, if you crumble you don't have to dunk, you can just add water to the crumbled pieces as they take on moisture much better than big slices.

thanks for that info/correction concerning inoculation points.

that is my impression: when just casing cakes, it's better to not crumble them. but surely someone can support the "crumble and case" method.

here's another benefit sort of: if you don't use wide mouth jars you may not have a choice. you may have to crumble at least partially just to get the cake out of the jar.

I started to use tape wrapped around my tupperware bowl but found it still let light through, so I just case in mugs. I've found they take up less space, don't have to worry about one cake contaminating the other, and you keep light away from the sides

But that's just the way I do it. Just another recommendation!

i would think its better to crumble them than to slice them. I haven't done casings yet, so I don't know for sure. Maybe I'll experiment with it a little when I start casing next week. I'll make a post with my results after its all said and done.

The reason I feel it is better to crumble ckaes is simple. You want the Mycelium(sp?) to spread amoung the casing layer. If you crumble the cakes, you get more of a "rocky" surface, thus allowing the mycelium to spread better. Sliced, straight edged cakes may not spread as fast. However, I see absolutely no difference in the potency when comparing these two methods.

cool. another vote for "greater surface area"/"more inoc points".

but i think any potential gain from the greater surface area may be eliminated by the shock to the mycelium.

perhaps the world will never know until someone does a comparison between the two methods. volunteers?

i actually plan on testing both theories. I'll let you know the results when I figure it out.
