full grown underground
    #11164551 - 10/01/09 05:34 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I came across a unique situation recently and am curious if anybody knows why such a thing would occur.

Basically I had a small tray of mushrooms growing, but not many mushrooms came up.  The ones that did come up were small and thin, and I attributed this to the fact that my substrate was slightly less thick than usual.  However before I gave up on the tray I did a little digging, in case there were some growing along the sides where the light can get.  Well lo and behold I was finding fully developed mushrooms inside the casing as I tore it apart.  They were twisted and sideways in the coir, but had opened, you could see gills and everything.

Does anybody know what could cause this?  I'll never again throw away another casing assuming it's 'finished' until I've taken it apart.

I don't have a camera, but hope I've described this well.  They had grown and opened up into mushrooms but inside the bed of rye/coir without seeing the light of day.  It was less thick than my usual because I'd used up the last of some pasteurized coir, and so the casing layer (peat/verm) was also thinner.  Would the thinner casing layer have permitted light to affect the substrate underneath and create this phenomenon?

Thanks for any insights.

I've never heard of this happening before.  A thinner casing layer would prevent this in the future.

im going to guess your casing was too wet and got matted down
the mushrooms grew under it because they couldnt get through

I see, libertaire, you're suggesting perhaps the casing layer was too dense to allow proper fruiting?  It wasn't particularly thick, as I wanted to keep the usual ratio, but your suggestion and SillyBilly's input have me thinking maybe I need to go back to sifting my peat like i used to, keeping it light and fluffy.

something is wrong with a mushroom health variable... thin stems is lack of FAE, warping can be caused by fae or too much moisture...

growig inside... not a mushroom, a scrolit or whatever those things are called...

pics or it didnt happen

Yes, I wish I had a camera- full-grown and opened, dark and twisted.  Hopefully they won't taste as evil as they look.

THANKS for the insight, no more slacking on the sifting!

keeping it fluffy is incredibly important
gets more air in there, more surface area equals more fresh air

mushrooms routinely push up through dirt, leaves and worse.. your casing was probably not the issue, sounds like FAE. fluffy casing or patted down casing both work.. no need to keep it fluffy, but it may have been a bit to thick and stopped the FAE from reaching the pins which inturn caused weak stems that cold not push the casing layer..

:pm: me if you have questions about lasers

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Thank you so much, I will try all suggestions for the next time.

It was a jar that I'd put on hold a little while, in the fridge, then spawned later.
Maybe by then the mushrooms were so excited to grow they didn't bother waiting!

As for throwing them out, I don't think I will.
They do seem kind of evil, like dark zombie shrooms...but maybe underneath they have a heart of gold.
Just misunderstood, ya know?
