Gymnopilus roots, a key to finding BLG's
    #11164309 - 10/01/09 04:47 PM (8 years, 24 days ago)

Last year while picking BLG's (big laughing Gyms) I pulled up the "taproot" from a mulch bed used to cover over a stump that had been ground.  The home owners had planted flowers in it.  As a test I pulled cluster out from the ground taking the root with it.  I wanted to see if the root was grown each year or if it stayed there all year and put out mushrooms when the conditions were right.  Today I checked the bed and new mushrooms had formed even though I took the root last year.

For those that have never seen a root, here are some photos.  The root is literally as hard as wood.  Normally when I pick these I leave the root for obvious reasons.  I guess it really doesn't make a difference whether you do or not.

And the key is that Gyms growing on buried wood will return to fruit the following year.  I have picked some locations for over 10 years.

Nice man. I haven't found any of those in 3 years. They probably still grow in that yard across town...

Very nice...do you know what type of stump it is? I would like to start searching for these.

i have taken little chunks of wood that had gym mycelium on it and buried them in hard wood chips next to telephone lines that the telephone company had recently cut up.

i wont know the results until next summer.

Very interesting.  So the root shown is the one taken last year?  Did you investigate underneath the ground again so see how the root replenishes? (the tree was cut, you said, right?).

I may be out of my mind here but what I did was take a nasty gym cap that not worth eating and tossed it in a water bottle.  I shook it vigerously and now it has been sitting for about a night.  I want to spray it on some pine stumps possibly during the rain (?) and hope something happens.  I may not know how spores work exactly I'm just hoping some magic happens.
