simple agar recipe
    #11163611 - 10/01/09 12:29 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I just bought some pure agar agar powder from an asian market and I need an easy way to add nutrients to it for use as a culture medium. I have bakers yeast and potato flakes as well as whole potatoes. I can also probably get my hands on some malt extract but I can't seem to find dextrose. If some one could tell me a quick and easy recipe with what I have available that would be great. Oh, I also have some honey. Thanks!!!

That has some good recipes but nothing with agar and yeast, or agar with potato flakes and honey, or using boiled down potato water and just agar. All of these recipes call for strange ingredients that I am unfamiliar with and cannot find. I thought this was a good tek,
http://www.shroomery.org/9427/Grocery-Store-Agar-Tek
but the measurements for the amount of agar added are very rough because it is coarsely ground and mine is finely ground. Does anyone have a real simple tek that doesn't involve malt extract or dextrose.

I think I figured it out. At the beginning of the grocery store tek he mentions that the packages come in 9 gram strips and he uses half of one so that would be 4.5 grams of agar. So here is my recipe:
4.5 grams agar ( close to a 1/4 cup)
2 Tbs potato flakes
1 tsp honey
1 cup water

Does it sound right because I am about to give it the go ahead.

just use a standard potato recipe and ignore the destrose
broth from boiling 150 grams sliced potatoes
in 500ml water for 30 minutes(add water to 500ml)
(You can use 5 g of instant potato flakes instead)
9 g agar agar

and look here

Just something i thought i would add, dextrose is just another terminology for glucose if im not mistaken... after i pasteurized my h/p i had loads of poo water left over, if i mix about 10grams(maybe a little less) to 400ml(roughly half a pint) would that be too strong for my little baby's? or should i simply dilute it (pls specify by how much)

to get the most use out of the petri dish
its not cut into 3 sections, the petri is already sectioned into 3 parts
using poo water is not something you use for making agar.

he says in his video he gets them made with the 3 sections
you may not have heard that because you may have just seen the free videos

poo water is supposed to be used within 24 hours
and its for grains not agar or lc's

man i was so excited, o well i guess my plants will enjoy it at leaste, what happens after 24 hours? if it grows too much bacteria, then if i pc'd it should kill all those bloody contaminates
ps. if im asking too many questions just tell me and ill stop, i just love getting insite from more experianced growers, lol even amitures provide loads of info, even if its what not to do
Lc i can understand, but if put into agar why wouldnt it grow? PDA just seems like such a mission especially since ive got the water all ready done and everything

i would assume its a breeding ground for bacteria
better off using raw sugar, im going to try making an lc by pouring boiling water through dry malt extract and raw sugar. but im waiting on getting a stir bar made
is poo water some kind of sugar? i dont know
i just know you only want a small amount of sugars/dextrose in it
it spoils quickly

lol ok poo water, is exactly that when growing to bulk i wanted to use horse poo, i left it in a pot to soak for 24 hours, then rinced, chucked into a pillow case and cooked just under boiling for 2 hours, that water is my poo water, i was reading somewhere you dont even need honey/sucrose(sugar) or even dextrose/glucose in your lc, honestly i didnt bother trying it out, cause i suspect it to take longer to grow the culture and the point of lc is to shorten growth time not extend it cause you wanna save 4 ml's of mycelium food, i wouldnt use the poo water for lc cause its not clear, ive tried both honey and dextrose/glucose, and honey grows quicker, but i seriously want to try agar, and to my knowlage it only stiffens after cooling so if i were to pc it, id kill all the bacteria, wouldnt i?

u dont use agar for lc's
u combine agar agar and a dextrose or dry malt extract for petri dishes
i just dont think poo water is a sugar but i also dont know what the chemicals in poo are
i searched around but didnt find anything on the topic
thats as far as i can help you regarding the poo water

in my experience i havnt had luck with potato flakes
but i think i used the wrong stuff when i did home made
i used aguman or something that was supposed to be crushed agar in a jello like box
but i think boiling the ingredients together might mix stuff better

I plan on using the grocery store tek where you mix the solution and place it in small four ounce jars, seeing as how I do not have any petri dishes not in use and I am fed up with them anyways, then pc all the jars and this heat the soluytion and turns it to gelatin. Is this a good method, I don't want to pour the liquid into the jars in a glovebox. Thanks for the help though feelfunny, I wish to join the family, I will pm you.
