It sounded in tune. I'm freaking obsessive over that. Sometimes I tune up three or four times a day.
You're pretty good. Nice sounding guitar, too.
Are you going to add in some vocals?

It sounded in tune, but you should really bust out a metronome while you practice. Your tempo varied a lot through that.

I hardly ever tune my guitar, i can't hear the difference unless it's way off.
but yeah - slow down a little

haha yeah, I did not set that out at all, twas just a jam(that's the reason behind the tempo change), and to answer the other question, yeah I guess I did write it haha. the chords are out there, and i just kinda picked and choosed.
But yeah, I def should play with a metronome, listening to myself I could really use the practive.
and, I would not embarrass myself enough to sing :P

I'm no guitar expert, but in my opinion if it sounds right then it doesn't matter. When I'm jamming I just try and find the root chord or note real quick and just go by ear from there. To much theory makes you sound mechanical.

i like the phrase "if it sounds good, it is good"
justinguitar.com - great great stuff.
i kind of dislike theory as a whole, as somebody who listens to a lot of blues music and A LOT of hendrix(who played purely off of his ear) getting into the jive of learning music theory can be quite frustrating - especially because I don't want to learn it, I just wish I had a better ear for music sometimes ridiculous i'm sure.

No I totally agree, I feel like learning lots of theory is actually bad for your sound in some ways, it makes you sound less like an individual player and more like everybody else. This is WAY more pronounced in people who got lessons. They end up just playing licks and progressions that they were shown or that they learned. Most of the best guitarists have always been self taught, at least my favorites: Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Omar Rodriguez Lopez...the only guitarist I like who was taught that comes to mind is Ler LeLonde from Primus.

I don't get how those fuckers do it. Especially before the age of the internet. Did they just play.. A LOT? Did they have some kind of unnatural talent or ear for it? Or a mixture of both - it baffles me.
I think Jimmy Page had lessons though He started playing at a very young age, and his parents were both musicians I believe who sent him to school for it - I could be wrong.

well, im guessing for alot of them, all the had for entertainment was their guitar, and playing it all the time, u will get good, all it takes is constant practice, and figuring out sounds, i remember this thing where someone asked eddie van halen if he ever had lessons, and he said 'no, that's why i can play the crazy stuff i can'

yeah- I don't know how they do it, they gotta have some kind of gift. i can play all day and I'll notice marginal marginal improvement - but figuring out things like arpeggios or scales and not knowing that they are infact arpeggios or scales baffles me.
the interesting thing is that music theory came from music - and not the other way around, so maybe I'm just making it harder then it needs to be.
i can't stand technical players however, no emotion - no interest.

When you practice, do you make up your own shit to jam on? Making up your own jams and songs is the best way to discover the instrument for yourself I think, combined with jamming with others and learning songs by ear (and tabs when it's too hard).

Do you know about equal temperament?
essentially what it means is that it is physically impossible for a guitar to be 100% in tune. If the 5ths are perfect, the 3rds will be slightly out of tune. The best way to tune is using the natural harmonic at the 12th fret to match the fretted not at the 7th fret on the next string

yeah- I don't know how they do it, they gotta have some kind of gift. i can play all day and I'll notice marginal marginal improvement - but figuring out things like arpeggios or scales and not knowing that they are infact arpeggios or scales baffles me.
the interesting thing is that music theory came from music - and not the other way around, so maybe I'm just making it harder then it needs to be.
i can't stand technical players however, no emotion - no interest.
When you practice, do you make up your own shit to jam on? Making up your own jams and songs is the best way to discover the instrument for yourself I think, combined with jamming with others and learning songs by ear (and tabs when it's too hard).
i always make up my own shit, I have a real hard time playing tabbed out songs mostly because they're wrong 95% of the time and it's just a real timid way to learn a song - when reading tab I feel like I'm cheating and not really gaining any skills or knowledge.

when it comes to classical guitar, really no self-training can compare to lessons. The instrument requires proper technique, something that has been developed over hundreds of years, and just learning on your own can make you wind up with a lot of bad habits that will make it extremely difficult to play more advanced pieces well
and even when it comes to improvising, good jazz lessons can put things in perspective in ways that might take a person much much longer to come to understand on their own

I'm glad I have a friend who started playing arond the same time as I did, and we correct eachother on mistakes and get a lot better playing together then when alone.

are you talking about classical? because really when it comes to classical guitar, proper technique is exponentially more important for playing well

I think Classical/Flamenco and/or Jazz lessons hands down will give you the best understanding of the most efficient way to approach the manual labor it takes to play the instrument (I.E. Technique)
However it won't teach you how to write a good song, won't teach you how to innovate (In fact I kind of think of classical as the total inverse of innovation) won't teach you how to write songs people will like (Thin Ramones, Danzig...even the simler to play Beatles tunes)
I'd say the best direction is to take is a combination of lessons and playing how you want to play. Having fun. Making Music. Making a song from scratch. No one can REALLY teach you how to do that. I have met guitarists with nearly PERFECT technique and a mind full of flawless music theory who have been playing for over 30 years...and have never written a song. If you have written even ONE song, you are "a-head" of them in some ways.
Continue to write, play and learn, but I think the best discoveries come from being in the fun.

i learned a bunch of basic scales and chords, and now i just come up with riffs and licks all the time and throw them together to improvise - it's great.

Same here! I mean I do study music theory, both by reading and observation...but honestly I think advice I read from Jerry Garcia was the bestest. He said something like this:
"I'm only concerned with playing music that'll be fun the 100th time I play, whether it be simple or comlex" Something like, or that;s what I got out from it.

Never heard that quote, I like the quotes from major guitarists, especially the one "at first you'll hate guitar, but you need to stick with it" which Hendrix said. music theory gives me a headache, but I do have a book on it that I read as mucha s I can.

who said anything about classical guitar? the OP, playing one in his video
by the way, the technique I am emphasizing about classical guitar really has very little to do with theory, it has to do with physics and self-awareness, beauty of tone, economy of energy, etc
but when it comes to theory and general and the guitar...
I LOATHE music theory classes...I've also had some guitar teachers that weren't very good at all, but when you get a really good teacher, all the theory comes into perspective, and it's like OOOOHHHHHHH, this all makes so much sense now. I don't know how to elaborate, I'm sick and out of it...
but do yourself a favor and learn the CAGED system...it makes guitar playing so much easier to understand. All chords and scales can be found easily using the CAGED system. Instead of having to memorize a million different patterns, you just learn a few, and see how each chord and scale is just an alteration of those few. This is extremely helpful with scales, because you begin to see how, with a few exceptions, it's all the same scale, just starting on a different note, (and still using the CAGED system to make it easy...meaning play scales with your hand in one position based on a chord pattern) so you basically just get to know the one scale really well across the fret board (starting in different positions) and then you can play pretty much anything, in tons of different flavors
sorry for bad description i'm sick and dont feel good

If you're into Hendrixy blues, you should start using your thumb if you already don't.
That's part of how he got that sound as I'm sure you know, the thumb keeping the E down, acting as a bass note while his fingers can keep going.
I started using my thumb at the start but the only downside is I now find it hard to play normally. My thumb usually just ends up hanging over.
