ID Req! (Psilocybe semilanceata (liberty caps)?)
    #11160513 - 09/30/09 11:53 PM (8 years, 9 months ago)

We picked them at a field, not very high grass but with a fair bit
of tussocks- probably cows using that field from time to time.

They were sort of orange, I believe we picked them very young.

I've got a couple of photos, sadly they were sort of dry here, but
if you can tell anything at all it would be of great help.

Its gonna be hard to say much with pictures of dried LBMS that were small to begin with. I can say Orange doesnt sound like it would be P. Semilanceata though.

Actually they DO look a lot like it to me, but since there are lots of other LBMs that look like P. semilanceata when they are dried out it's really impossible to tell with 100% certainty without a microscopic examination at this point.

well from the few looks at the gills I could glimpse they don't look dark enough for libs. i would suggest conocybe but some of the nippled caps do look similar to Psilocybe. I would suggest the OP return to the field for fresh specimens before a definite id is procured.

I will try to return to the field for more photos, but I'm not sure if I will be able to... either way~

Do you know if any of the mushrooms that are similar to these when dried out, that are too deadly to consume? If there arent any deadly mushrooms that look like these when dried (perhaps with the criteria of growing on grassy fields around temperatures of 2c at night and 15c at daytime-) I could just eat them to ID them~

And thanks a lot for the replies, much appriciated.

Don't be a dumbass and eat unidentified mushrooms just because you want a quick trip. That's ghetto and it could very well be the last thing you eat.

I completely understand, however I would still value the information regarding the matter of which mushrooms I'm likely to be confusing these with. If that's not a bad question, I'm fairly new to the world of mushrooms (as if that's not already obvious).

There are countless so called LBMs ("little brown mushrooms") that an unexperienced hunter could confuse Psilocybe semilanceata with. I'm not going to start listing them here or googling them for you. The Internet is choke full of information (especially this site) and there are countless books out there, too.

There's just too many lookalikes to the untrained eye. They're most often confused with panaeolus species or conocybe albipes.

they could be Conocybe.  I would get better pics or throw them out.  they are most likely not anything you want to eat.
