Why do people think mushrooms are poisonous?

I mean what is up with all this magic mushrooms are poisonous bullshit? They aren't poisonous some people just have weak stomachs and have nausea. Is that why they think that? Some people will go as far to say that the only reason you are hallucinating is from food poisoning too? I mean wtf? Are these people dense? Food poisoning? :rolleyes: Some people you just can't tell them anything and they are convinced they are the fountain of knowledge. Fucking idiots. Yeah mushrooms are poisonous and lsd makes your brain bleed and has side effects for years. Keep thinking that you stupid ass simple fucks. Sorry just had to vent somewhere.  :chainsaw:

It's true. When I was in high school I learned that Magic Mushrooms make your brain bleed in combination with food poisoning, thus the hallucinations and body high.
...and LSD stays in your spinal cord, FOREVER!

I still can't convince people who are well educated, or have been in the "scene" for awhile, that neither of these are true. I stopped worrying about them. In fact, I stopped associating with them. Muahahahaha!

I've heard that myth many times. When I had some mushrooms, I mentioned something about one being poisonous, and some chick claimed:

"You should eat that, just don't take too much. The trippy ones are actually poisonous ones. Your body fighting the poison is what gives you the visuals."

A human would have to eat something like 3 pounds of dried cubensis to reach the LD50 of psilocybin for rats, or maybe it was rabbits.

I gave mushrooms to a friend of mine.

He claimed that his eyeball was swelling out of its socket. Interestingly enough, a friend of his confirmed this.

So he calls the ambulance. Takes a trip to the ER. Doctor takes a look at his eye and gives him a shot of an antipsychotic.

Moral of he story:

STAY AWAY FROM POISONOUS MUSHROOMS!

I never backed any absurd statements. Psilocybin, the chemical, is toxic. But barely. Mescaline is like 250x more toxic. I think.

My problem was that you tried to sound like some genius and tried to "stir things up" by calling it a toxin, when it's blatantly obvious that EVERYTHING is toxic at high enough doses, even water.

alcohol and cigarettes are pretty much the most toxic drug of them all, they contribute to the deaths of thousands of people each week and funny thing is you can call into your local paper shop and buy either item off a shelf.

Mushrooms were perfectly legal in the UK until 2005. At some point in 2005 someone wearing a suit and tie with no idea about anything said, mushrooms are bad therefor they are now banned. a class-A Drug, in the same category as Cocaine and Heroin... bearing in mind as of 2005 dating back to 1500BC and beyond, people have been consuming psilocybin mushrooms as part of religion, rituals, routine and every day life.

It makes me wanna take mushrooms just to say a quiet "fuck you" to the British government.

Well it's okay, i was talking to like one of my friends about drugs and how much to take, trying to educate her a bit and talking about her body weight compared to mine and why our doses will be totally different. This chick seriously tripped out and was like, well boys and girls are different! I wouldn't take that much!! Girls get higher effects than guys because guys are more tolerant. I was like, thats totally not even proven. And she was like, yes it is want me to call my boyfriend? He'll tell you. I just let it go because there's no way she'll even listen. I tried explaining that everyone is different even if they had to same body weight. And every trip is different also. And i have had people tell me that its the fungus inside of shrooms that make you trip. Clearly a shroom of any kind is a type of fungi. It annoys me when people think they know EVERYTHING about something they know nothing about and just don't want to feel dumb compared to a "druggie" when they got themselves in the middle of it.

Even my stupid cousin who is like 8 years older than told me once. "That he saw tracers @ night for like a year one time after an acid trip. and that hish back was all fucked up." I was like bullllllshit and told him it was probably his imagination. "He's like yeah I don't know anything about acid, I've just lived it." Yeah right motherfucker don't talk to me about some time you tripped 12 years ago and make up some stupid bullshit that isn't true. I told him clean lsd leaves you feeling like you have been born again the next day(at a high enough dose). No negative side effects whatsoever. nothing stupid about that - mushrooms are the cure for tons of things, but I think cancer is a little more difficult then that.

Psilocybin does not qualify as a highly toxic substance when one uses traditional measures of acute toxicity such as the LD 50 (the dose required to kill 50% of experimental animals, usually rats.) Psilocybin has an LD 50 of 280mg/kg. In comparison, the LD 50’s of LSD, THC (the active compound in marijuana), and mescaline are 30mg/kg, 42mg/kg, and 370 mg/kg.

The toxicity of psilocybin is low; in rats, the oral LD50 is 280 mg/kg, approximately one and a half times that of caffeine. When administered intravenously in rabbits, psilocybin's LD50 is approximately 12.5 mg/kg[38] (however rabbits are extremely intolerant to the effects of most psychoactive drugs). The lethal dose from psilocybin toxicity alone is unknown at recreational or medicinal levels, and has never been documented. Psilocybin makes up roughly 1% of the weight of Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms, and so nearly 1.7 kilograms of dried mushrooms, or 17 kilograms of fresh mushrooms, would be required for a 60 kg person to reach the 280 mg/kg LD50 rate of rats.

And I think the LD50 for water is like 90ml/kg for rats.
