Keyboardists Lack Emotion
    #11158991 - 09/30/09 08:18 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

A trained ape could have played this and perhaps smiled at the end.  Not a keyboardist pure technicians for the most part give me drums bass and guitar anyday...

Agree and had or wished you had piano lessons as a child or actually beat on a drum...?

I agree, kind of.

But I'd also say, maybe you're looking for a pop or a twang where piano is something different. For instance, take someone who plays both guitar and piano, and you might find that he/she plays guitar in a unique and appreciable way.

I know what your saying though; if you ask me the most expressive instruments come through breathe. I tend to envy sax players for what they can manage that way; anything from humane sentimental to animal noises.

I actually have a sax, but it always seems to late to learn. But in light of your way of comparison, I'm not sure I would "give it up" for the sense of structure accessible through the piano. Where would music be without keys?

Anyways heres a pretty cool example of where I'm coming from - jazz guitarist/pianist Ralph Towner with Jan Garbarek on saxaphone once the song kicks in.

Mixing up Beethoven and Mozart.
Anyhow, Beethoven works for me.

Beethoven, no emotion? um... ok. Mozart's requiem is where it's at.

That was really good kukaracha cheers for posting that one.

Hip hop is some of my favourite music for emotion.

listen to phish and enlighten yourself - page mcconnell is one of the most soulful keyboardist out there

also, piano and keyboard are the only instrument where you play both the bass line and the melody , guitar you can to some extent, only when playing a particular style, but it is not the same as the piano, where the two are working harmonously together

ha... it reminded me of this one time i was talking to Johnny Neel (another blind keyboard player) and asked him:

me: "so johnny, what do blind people see when they take acid?"
johnny: "what you don't".

My vision is getting worse, but my playing still sucks. Perhaps if I pluck my eyes out...

I am confident that you literally have no idea what you are talking about. Just because you don't show emotion in your facial features or the way you move doesn't mean you are without emotion.

I just so happen to play guitar and I just learned to play piano a few months ago. I show a lot of emotion in my face when I play the guitar, but for some reason when I play piano I don't. I know several people that say the same thing.

To see one keyboardist play without showing emotion and then to take the huge step to generalize all keyboardist as emotionless, is idiotic and narrow minded.:thumbup:

I don't think facial features have anything to do this this discussion, justin.

the keyboardist in the OP was just a techie.. thats all. he probably has a wealth of understanding as to how his machines work. you cannot blame him for lacking musical feeling
