wet filter patch
    #11158985 - 09/30/09 08:17 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Hey everyone...

i just pressure cooked two bags of grain, first time doing it with filter patch bags... tried my best to keep the filter patches from gettin wet, but i was unsuccessful.  I wipped them, well basically soaked them, with rubbing alcohol to try and keep them clean.  My two questions are..

Do you think ill be ok using this bags? or am i setting myself up with the wet filter patches, even after hittin it with alcohol?

Any advice on how to avoid this in the future?

i think if they get really wet they become bad
which is pissing me off because ive still yet to get an answer on how high mountain compost and the other vendors pasteurize their substrates in these bags

well i mean, i dont think they go "bad" its just that the wet patch is a magnet for contams... or at least that is my understanding with anything wet when it comes to the task of keepin things contam free.  You dont think that soakin it in alcohol might alleviate the problem?

I use the TEK in RR's video.. accordion folding the top down, plate on top. Did about 20 bags last week (for the first time).. no wet issues.

Water level too high?

SillyBilly (my little girl calls me that..lol)

If they are "pasteurizing," odds are it is transferred to the bag in a sterile environment after the process (though I have no idea how they do it).. if you mean sterilizing.. then it is very much possible.

yeh i know what you mean. because if you let those things sit out exposed and the moisture starts accumulating on the filter they get bad real quick. i cant answer your question as im trying to still figure it out myself.

I don't know.. are you letting it completely cool down and form a vacuum in the PC before removing? If so, you might use this to your advantage if trying to dry the patch out. I use the TEK where the bag is hung to suck air back in through the filter patch to inflate the bag some. But before I do this, it is vacuum sealed shut (including the patch area). In that state it may be possible to dry it out some how, before it opens back up. I would say after it is dry, then alcohol it.. not sure what the procedure should be in that situation..

yeah, i let it cool off compeltly before i opened the pressure cooker up.  but the patch was still a little wet... i took the bags out now, and soaked the patch in alcohol... i guess ill give it a couple hours to dry out and then hit it again... think i should be good after that?

just a little concerned about wasting 4 lbs of rye grain

Yeah, I am sure.. that blows. Just be clean as possible while dealing with it.. some have had no issues with a wet patch, some have.. Good Luck either way!

hey next time you do a bag, be sure to crumble up tin foil on the inside surfaces of the pc, also if you fold it correct and put a pice of tin foil over the bag, it will reduce a fair amount of moisture buildup on the filter patch.

True.. I have a ton of multi shaped pieces of crushed tin foil now. Keeps everything in shape!
