Confused About Tyvek Material
    #11155057 -

I Searched it, read about, still cant seem to get an answer to my question, So In The "6T WBS Tek" He puts 1 layer of tyvek under the lid, iwth 2 pretty big holes ontop, then when i searched through the forums, Some ppl are saying to put 2 layers of tyvek, then some are saying dont but the tyvek under the lid but it over the lid, so im confused, i need a straight answer, do i put the layer under the lid or over the lid? Do I use one or 2 layers? i only have one very small hole in the top of my jar just big enough for the needle, do i even need the tyvek layer? can i just put tin foil and call it good?

One Other Question should i put a small layer of vermiculite ontop of the WBS Then Presure Cook it?

Thank You for you help

first post here! I have been reading the same things as sounderror, and am also interested in the best method. My current plan is to put one layer of tyvek on top of the jar.

You should follow the lid making method on Doc's wild bird seed tek. He uses tyvek and polyfill. I have used the tyvek/polyfill combo numerous times with great success. It also works well with rye and pf jars (if you wanna take out the verm layer).

ok
polyfill works keeps in moister good u want small holes when using it and to put in the holes roll a small piece in your hands like you would roll a playdo snake

i never used poly fill out side the lid
i used it on the inside
inside is better for 1 reason i can think of and thats finding the hole

you want tyvek or polyfill or both

from what ihear tinfoil dont help with nothin but when u pc so more watter dont boil in to the jar

No verm in the WBS. It won't stay on top after you shake anyway.

I've gone back and forth on lids. I've used Tyvek all year, and now I'm leaning back toward polyfil.
Drill or punch two holes in the lid- one for an RTV injection port, one for a poly puff.

i got the roll of tyv from lowest or homedebet . i have been doing the self healing port thing. 2 1/4 inch holes 1 filled with rtv the other has a round circle of ty-v rtv'd to the under side of the lid.

thats it. nothing else just the lid and ring. if you use any ty-v that is made into other stuff then ya 2 layers but the home improvement type in the big roll is the best i have found.

if you do the lid thing with rtv then 1 roll will live longer than you and i just dish wash lids jars etc fill and pc.

once you get a few going they save time.

i do not have a link to the tek but the idea is simple and the ty-v on the inside of the jar has do problems getting wet cuz ty repels h20.

good luck

Let me quote myself from a week or so ago when we were talking about this same subject. hope this helps:

Psuper said:
For a single layer Tyvek filter you want to use material from the suits, sleeves, or kite material(RR's advice there). The Tyvek envelopes are thinner tyvek and are most often, as far as i can tell, used in conjunction with a second layer of tyvek, or on top of a jar lid hole stuffed with poly-fill. That isn't to say that some people don't use a single layer effectively.

I used the thinner Tyvek on top of a Tyvek stuffed lid for my first few projects, because I learned bulk projects first from Doc34 (who is a TC no longer an active member here) and his WBS-Tek, but I really think that having a single layer of good Tyvek (I use the sleeves) is better. And, while i use rye berries now, changing my lid and filter setup along with continuously perfecting my grain prep (i.e. moisture content) is what was needed to bring down the colonization times of my jars. ~P~

The filter should be on the outside of the jar so it will remain dry. Wet filter material is almost as bad as no filter at all.

If you're serious about this hobby, order some synthetic filter disks. They cost about 40 cents each and can be used thousands of times, over and over again. They're about ten to twenty times the thickness of tyvek, breathe well, and don't wear out. That makes them not only the best, but also the least expensive filter method.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

to my knowledge, tyvek is supposed to give you good fae(free air exchange) without the worry of contaminates, i dont think ive ever seen it here but i think it should let a little air through, otherwise one should just put tinfoil on top
