dry ice for drying?
    #1115499 - 12/05/02 10:57 PM (15 years, 13 days ago)

anyone ever heard of using dry ice to dehydrate magic mushies?
i was talking to an "old skooler" today and he mentioned something about dry ice dehydrating mushrooms really fast. any truth to that?

that's interesting. from that link it looks like the dry-ice is used for preserving the mushies after being dried, right? what i had in mind was using the dry ice as a dessicant in the bottom of a bowl with a wire "shelf" that the shroomies will sit on. i guess that the dry ice can not be used like that, but it sure seems to work wonders with preserving them. thanks for the reply.

If you want cheep desiccant then try epsom salts. Stick it in a al. foil lined pan and bake for 45 minutes at 400f. It should melt and then turn hard into a crystal. Break it up and heat for 10 more minutes and store in glass jars. Works fine for me

oops, sorry i linked you to the wrong tech can't seem to find it but you can freeze dry them with dry ice.

*i believe this is the way it woks*
put the dry ice in the bottom of a container
mushrooms go on top of the dry ice
the lid has a hole to allow pressure to escape
once the container has filled up with CO2 flip it over, make sure the hole is not blocked off and place it in your freezer

the dry co2 gas will draw moisture from the mushrooms, then the falls through the hole.
I haven't tried it myself but I see no reason it wouldn't work

That sounds super awsome!, do you know if perserving them this way will stop the psilocin from oxidizing? Or does the drying still destroy that prescious chemical?

Dry ice is used for storage AFTER the shrooms are dried.

it doesn't dry them, it just puts 100% CO2 into the jar so there is no oxygen to further break down the mushies.

here's some products that may be easier to use

Wine opener with CO2 cartridge with a needle for opening wine. This could be used to INJECT CO2 directly into a jar or tuperwarecontainer.

Here is a bike tire inflator that uses CO2 cartridges. The CO2 cartridges are cheap and can be bought anywhere. THe only thing you would need, is a needle filler adapter for inflating basketballs, soccerballs and volleyballs.

or

it would do the same thing as dry ice
