Grateful Dead songs?

Do any of you know of any really enjoyable Grateful Dead songs. I've downloaded some of their songs, but I don't really like them that much. I don't want to give up on The Dead all too soon, so if any of you could guide me to some PSYCHEDELIC songs of theirs it would really help me out a lot.
P.S. - For all those posts about Shpongle, they are awesome as some of you say. And yes, my friend just got the cd's and there are many, many differences between them and mp3's. Although we have not listened to the cd's under the influence yet, you can just here the tiny details that the wonderful duo create for us. I never go anywhere without their cd's! I recommend you get the cd's if possible, but if not, you can get the mp3's, too. They are even worth while!

An excellent song is the live version of "Terrapin Station." "Sugar Magnolia" is another great tune by them.

I love the late 60's early 70's stuff the best. Pretty much anything live is awesome. As far as tripping goes, Dark Star, The Other One, and The Eleven are my favorite, they even have this feed back stuff that is made for tripping. Those songs are incredible anyways (well, besides feedback) That folky stuff from American Beauty, like Friend of the Devil, Box of Rain, and songs like Truckin', Bird Song, Cosmic Charlie, Viola Lee Blues, and pretty much anything up to '77 is great.

I initially never had much of a while-doing-psychedelics appreciation for the Grateful Dead -- it took a while... years, in fact. I was more into Jefferson Airplane, Pinl Floyd, and Jethro Tull type stuff in my early days of tripping.
If you can get ahold of the Dead's "Shakedown Street", give it a try. It's kind of mellow and very easily digestable when laid back in a groovin' sort of space...

i agree that it's got to be live. there are piles of mp3s at www.gdlive.com. pick a dark star from late 60's or early 70's.

Unfortunatly, I never had the opprotunity to go to a dead show. But I have listened to them for about four years now and i consider myself pretty knowledgable of dead recordings...
OK, for pure psycadellia ( know i spelled that wrong) a must album is LIVE/DEAD. It was released in 72 and it is a show for 1970 at the famous (infamous) Fillmore East. It is relatively common and you should be able to find it at any store with a Dead section. Some songs on that album? ST.STEPHEN, DARK STAR, THE ELEVEN. One thing about live dead, everytime I put it in and it strts playing dark star,.. I get this weird feeling.. not like cold chills but.. this ancient pure feeling. to many drugs u say? maybe, but music kind of hits me like this sometimes... heh Aother MUST is the second studio album GD ever did entitled ANTHEM OF THE SUN. This is by far the best studio example of their song segues and on top of that its probably more tripped out than LIVE/DEAD. Right now Im listening to a new four disc album just released called STEPPIN' OUT WITH THE GD. Its very impressive. If youy havent yet gotten your hands on europe '72, get it first, and then get STEPPIN'. I say this because STEPPIN is made from the europe 72 shows, just diff. songs. As you can tell i listen to alot of dead. (heh) I hope I helped u out. Just remember
For live GD, LIVE/DEAD.... for pure tripped out good studio GD... ANTHEM OF THE SUN..

Ok, I'm getting confused with all these songs you've guided me to, how about the psychedelic cd's that I could just go to my local record store and pick up? You say that the live stuff is the best? Any cd's that I may enjoy while tripping or just looking to feel good while on the road in my car/wannabe VW Bus!

i'd say that until dick's picks, the only really trippy released dead lp was "Live Dead". the majority of the music listened to most dead-heads is recorded concerts traded for free. i think i've got like 3 or 4 released dead cds but i've got 58 live shows on cd.
but finally dick's picks started coming out and those are the best released dead cds to buy, imho. still, if you've got the bandwidth, nothing beats downloading hours and hours of live dead for free.

If you have the money, go buy Grateful Dead "The Golden Years (1965-1973)". I got it through insurance so it was cheap for me though. It is a ton of cd's and half of them are live. I love the dead til i die, and then on.

As for actual SONGS, disregard all you have read up to this point! J/K try" Unbroken chain" from Mars hotel(74) or "Eyes of the World"(wake of the flood 73) those are the two definitive GD songs(imo) Wtf is Ripple 58 when you need him?

Okay. I can't believe nobody has mentioned "Without a Net." Shpongloid, go to your nearest music store and buy this double cd. You won't be disappointed. Trust me. Some highlights include Althea, Cassidy, Bird Song, China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider, Eyes of the World and Help On The Way/Slipknot!/Franklin's Tower. This album is proof that psychedelia was alive and well even in the late 80s.
