Is it some kind of fungus? Should I try fungicide or just chop the tip off?
No idea where it came from, though my roommate's theory is that it has been too humid in our apartment.
On the upside, it doesn't seem to be advancing very fast.

update: I fertilized it on Saturday and the spot seems to have shrunk a little. (just checked on it)

Fertilizer would not have changed anything, and the shrinking your experiencing is due to the spot rotting away. I would pull that thing out of the soil immediately and check the root system. Root rot will often appear with no signs other than a rotted tip.

I live in northern Illinois... actually it's been over 80 degrees in my room consistently for almost the entire time since I moved in in August. I only just started getting chilly today.

if that's the case, what do i need to do to stop root rot? Transplant into new soil?

Just take a sterilized knife to it until you see no more black nastiness
It looks severely etiolated as well, give that poor thing some more light!

unfortunately easier said than done... my balcony and the window of my room both face directions that only get a couple hours of sunlight, maximum, per day, and as we approach fall it will probably get even worse. This last month was probably the best sunlight my cacti have ever gotten.
Would a heat lamp be a wise investment?

Invest in some grow lights to help aid with the lighting lighting, although it will never be as good as full sun.

just chopped the tip off... looks normal on the inside.
If it were root rot, would there be black all the up through the core, or no?

Yeah, it was probably an infection due to the tip being etiolated, I find that tends to make the flesh more susceptible to disease.

ok, that's a relief...
would a normal household lamp, in this case one with multiple bulbs that can be positioned where you want 'em and gets really hot when it's been on for a while, be an tolerable light source for a cactus in the absence of sunlight? It's cloudy here.

here's what I came up with for now...
in the absence of sunlight or a grow lamp, is this better than just letting them sit in the dark???

Those poor poor things need far more light than that
Get some CFLs for the time being, I think I saw some 46W CFLs at Target the other day for 8.50 each, unless you have enough to invest in a HPS or MH setup.
PS Your P-Bass is missing a few strings

yeah, I don't really have the money or space to invest in the real deal right now. I will check out those bulbs you're talking about.
Thanks for the assistance. I do genuinely feel bad about the treatment these sacred plants have gotten from me, not by choice mind you, but I should have known this is not an ideal climate for them.

I bought a couple 100W CFL's for 12.25, and one 150W for 8.50 at lowes.
They do not produce the thickest cacti, but they work fairly well, especially for the price, they are awesome for seedlings though.
