Newbie help, The 4 cake question

This is my first grow. I've got 4 fully colonized pf cakes cakes sitting in a cooler, perlite humidity, and manual air exchange 3 times a day. They have been in the fruiting chamber for about 4 days now.

My problem/question is that out of the four, one of them has 4 primordia growing steadily while none of the others do.

The other three do have some very small fuzzy little nubs that look to me like what I believe hyphal knots are - but they are not doing a whole lot.

Is this deviation in the development between cakes normal.

Also, I don't have a hydrometer (yes, flame me as I have flamed others for not having one, but I'm quite literaly broke), but I'm contemplating beging the practice of misting with each manual air exchange. What are your thoughts?

Good question. No, that's why I was going to start misting.

make sure there isn't too much water in the perlite. that will help. Also maybe think about getting a bubbler. Definately mist the walls when you open to fan and possibly more than that if there is no moisture on the sides. Maybe case a couple because the humidity will be more suitable for that. I tried casing and have it in the fruiting chamber now. Just a one cake but I figured if I go wrong with one I will still have the other. :grin:

I just thought of something else. The get much more than a couple of hours of light. The get indirect light throughout the entire day. Should I reduce the exposure time.

imho, shouldn't matter. i leave light on 24/7 when i can't be around. came home to find massive fruits.

thats probably a good idea. I have been keeping mine on for 24 hours at first and the forum recommended I cut back. I have one cake with pins about and 1 inch tall and they grow about 1/10 to 2/10 of an inch a day but I think it's because humidity problems. I got a bubbler and someone gave me a good idea to use it more effectively. I would cut back but I bet humidity is your issue.

Good news on the lighting. I'm going to stick with the cakes for this initial grow and case with the next.

Cool. So it's safe to say that when conditions are optimal, you'd see all cakes (the same age) in the fruiting chamber developing at the same rate?

Yup, wait a bit longer.  4 days is not nearly enough time to begin worrying, especially if one cake is already pinning  :wink:

still humidity plays a part. You should have some condesation of the walls. If there is none evident try something new. i.e. misting more, bubbler, etc. :smile:

I don't see condensation on the walls as being necessary. I've kept my terr. at 100% rH with just perlite, no droplets whatsoever. Then again, my hygrometer is not "high quality".

I don't even have hygrometer so I can't really say. I have heard this many times from reliable sources though. But like angry myco said, it can be done, and if your cakes are fine then I wouldn't worry.
