Steam bags instead of PC

has anyone ever heard of using Glad steam bags to sterilize wbs, coir, and verm???
in the microwave???

.....ive heard that even for verm u just soak extra and microwave for like 5 minutes and the wbs just for 10 minutes

any comments???

listen....i did use the the FSE!! if i wanted to hear some whine like a little girl id go talk to my little baby sister..i ask here on these foroums cause i thought this was where noobs ask the vets for advice....i searched a lot....i might of searched for everything but "steam bag microwave"...in the future if my question bothers you.....dont answer shadow

I only used steam bags when prepping my bulk ingredients. Too risky to try to completely sterilize spawn with them. Plus I invested in a PC so it was never an option for me really.

Medela makes a microwave system for sterilizing breast milk bottles. I didn't believe it until I saw it.

But there's a  huge difference between some tiny plastic bottles and a couple of quarts of substrate. You aren't going to sterilize anything big enough to be useful.

well first of all..

..i have a pc....my problem is that since im using a LOT of wbs, coir, and verm i was leaningin towards the bags because..

a) in each bag i can fit more than a quart of substance
b) to sterilize in bag only takes 10 minute
c) i dont have a lot of jars and theyre not really cheap or easily accessible in my area
d) process takes a while with the jars; it especially takes a while if im doin bulk


im not planning to use the bags for coir...coir just use HOT water in a big bucket and then strain to field capasity...

the bags would be for wbs and for verm...wbs ive read i just prepare just like with jars...i think i have to keep it wetter than usual wen i stik it in the bag....the verm extra wet and for half the time as the wbs


im planning to case with jiffy mix...and mix a little extra verm into it....does anyone know if i have to sterilize jiffy mix or if its fine straight out of the bag???

Properly prepared coir won't need straining.

And In MY Experience, cutting corners will eventually end in disaster.

the coir...i believe im suppose to use 1 gallon of water per brick..right???

i wud like to not cut corners....but it would take 2 days to pc all the wbs and verm..at least...and that means pcing every hour....plus since i only have one pc..i wud have to let the pc cool down for an hour every time....i guess i should get a second pc...but pc's arent cheap for the size i would need


any opinions on the jiffy??

Jiffy should be pasteurized just for safeties sake. Use your oven bags w/ a vegetable steamer or steaming basket in a large covered pot.
