I'm confused about Ps.Galindoi... ATL#7

Is Ps.Galindoi and ATL#7 the same species???
Also, isn't the original "Philosopher's stone" Ps. Mexicana and not Atlantis?
Weird questions, I know...

uh,no, they were confused b/c some got sent out mislabeled, but they're different. And I think the philosopher's stones were asssociated with the tampanesis.

So ATL#7 is a strain of Ps.Galindoi?
So there are four major species that produce sclerotia? mexicana atlantis tampanensis and galindoi
???

ATL#7 is a strain of Psilocybe galindoi from the Atlanta area of Georgia. It was confused with Psilocybe atlantis for some time.
I think the original philosopher's stone was Psilocybe tampanensis. It was definately not Psilocybe atlantis as that is a relatively recently described species.

You can add P. armandii, P. samuiensis and possibly P. makarorae to that list also. inski..

Atlantis is galindoi. And there are more species than that that produce sclerotia. The original Philosopher's Stone was P. tampanensis though, also sold as Cosmic Comote.

It isn't known if P. atlantis actually produces sclerotia but it is suspected to do so.
P. mexicana, P. tampanensis and P. galindoi (Georgia collections) are the main species.
Minor Psilocybes known to produce sclerotia.
P. armandii P. samuiensis

Yeah and it was also mentioned that semilanceata also does too. Minor ones of course.

And by the way, is it possible that tampanensis spends most of its life underground?? Maybe that's why it rarely throws a fruit up.
Do sclerotia have spores inside of them??

No spores inside sclerotia. And most mushrooms spend most of their lives as mycelium if you think about it. Even Ganodermas, whose lives are incredibly long-lived as mushrooms, start out as mycelium that is alive longer than the mushroom.
P. tampanensis doesn't seem to be more difficult to cultivate than other sclerotia producing mushrooms. Since that's the case, something else must contribute to its rarity. I'd guess at two factors: habitat destruction, but more importantly, they're little.

I C.
Isn't the current stock of tampanensis also in BIG trouble due to a lack of a diverse gene pool?

Also...
Wikipedia definitely needs a P. galindoi page now.
I wonder if Alan is up for it.

Damn... Nice work!
However, Mr. Mushrooms stated that atlantis is galindoi!! What's with that?
