Doc, this ones for you.
    #11146247 -

I just picked up a couple 4 lb bags of Pennington's Bird seed and found a noticeable amount of small rocks. Is this normal? I know it does not really matter if they are present but I was just curious. I know you tend to use this brand so wanted to see if you have had run into the same thing.

It's there on purpose- it is for the birds to put in their craws.
It won't hurt your grow. It gets mixed in pretty well anyway, it's not like there's a pile of gravel in one jar.

Man, I love Pennington's. :heartpump:

Oh, word. I did not know that.

Yeah, I was going to leave them regardless. I wasn't about to try and pick them all out.

I'm really liking it so far. Didn't have too many floaters or empty shells, small amount of corn and sunflower seeds, and also is primarily red millet. Which is awesome because it doesn't fall through my strainer

They also had some 8 lb bags with added nutrients, but I figured that it would all rinse off anyway with the crazy amount of rinsing I usually do...

The 8 pound bags are often a better deal, but not always. The Bird-Kote doesn't hurt anything, I've used that stuff straight into the jars without rinsing.
But go ahead and rinse and remove the floaters like you are doing, it makes for a good texture, as you know.

Do you use wire strainers? I seem to get better results with thosse than with plastic, not sure why.

I'm using penningtons as well. I've been removing some of the stones but I guess it might be better to leave them if they are crushed oyster shells.

I just used Pennington Finch Food for my second WBS attempt and it worked like a charm. Would definitely use it again.

Ive got this sorry little plastic strainer I use. I need to invest in a wire mesh one though.

Yeah the larger bag was a slightly better deal but I was not sure about the Bird-Kote.  Plus the 4 lb bags are very convenient, and I had a gift card.

I wonder if we should stop mentioning it? :tinfoil:

Someday Mr Pennington is going to Google his product, and then he'll click on a link to a thread like this.
"WTF?", he'll think, and start clicking around.

Did you ask them? Or is that standard in bird food?

I use a nylon mesh paint strainer that fits a 5 gallon bucket.  They sell them in a two-pack at Home Depot for a few dollars ..... very good way to go.

You can find small and medium size wire colanders at dollar stores.  They are pieces of crap and the profits from those stores are funneled through charities into al qaeda's pockets, but they will last quite a while before rusting up for your purposes if you don't feel like dropping $15 per quality wire strainer.  I've bought two quality colanders but still have a couple dollar store strainers about. ~P~

I haven't found a good strainer at a dollar store.
I got four at the Mart that Must Not Be Named, though.

Haha, that's where I picked up the Pennington's...

I was just up close and personal with the WBS and the little grey things sure look like rock. I don't think its oyster shell.

Sounds plausible to me. It would make good grit, but it's fairly soft and it is also a necessary mineral. Win/win.
