When I got my jars and verm and stuff I wanted to play around with humidity, I noticed with the lid slightly ajar and nothing in it (no holes eather) my FC box had 70+ humidity and 76 temp...

I desided to put a 1/2pint in the box with 50/50 verm water by volume (1/4cup each)... There were 2 holes in the jar about 1/8inch anyways... a day later I come back and see a few droplets of water on the sides, I thought, no way... Walked over and saw 95 humidity and 76 temp... I took out both gages and set them on the table next to my comp and humidity droped to upper 50's and the temp didnt change much my house is set at 75... so I know they work... they are unadjustable as well....

My question is... can I use a jar like this for my humidity? Has it been done?

i put a jar with water and holes in the FC, and it made 95% humidity...

can this be used as a reliable source of humidity, and has it been done

I kindof understood that. Except you refer to your fruiting chamber as a 'box'.

Does this 'box' have holes in it like a shotgun fruiting chamber? What kind of 'box' is it?

I have seen pics of a terrarium where the only humidity was provided by a fish bubbler that worked.

However, your jar of wet verm is probably going to start to stink with bacteria.

Not sure why you linked that... but okay interesting read...

My FC is a plastic box...

The jar in question isnt in it anymore... but yeah thats my FC, one of them...

No there werent holes when I did the jar the lid wasnt completely on eather though, and I have a slight breeze in the room from an air cleaner....

you dont need humidity until at the fruiting stage, i would also remove the foil on your jars. its just to stop water getting in during sterilisation.

It could be hindering gas exchange.

If a simple jar with wet verm worked for humidity we would all be ditching our bags of perlite.

www.mushroomvideos.com and watch the pf tek videos.

oh, and your face is not a valid hygrometer

im somewhat past the pf tek videos, ive watched them probly 20-30 times by now

im probly going to do some cases anyways i was just looking into this, apparently it wont work very well... although im going to test it with one of my cakes

and the foil is just set on top, i just threw them all back on because im unsure of what i covered my holes with... adhesive bandaging strips... aka sticky parts from band aids ^_^

so, what part of the pf tek says to put the foil back on and use band aids over the holes??

If you used the dry verm layer, both can be discarded.

I searched the site for pf tek. Opened it and saw this:

"After inoculation of the jars, tighten the lid bands and retape the needle holes."

I think this is a source of confusion for a lot of people. People used to advise taping the holes, but loosening the jar lids. This isn't made very clear in the actual tek tho.

The holes on PF jars should only be taped over with breathable paper medical tape or nothing at all. Sticky pads of bandages and any other tape is not suitable to get gas exchange.

Tape over before inoculation and retape afterwards or just once after inoculation. Always remove foil after boiling.

my 7 jars in the cabnet say otherwise... i dont plan on changing a single thing, not worth the risk they are all doing fine as is... and he doesnt appear to use a paper-like "tape" it looks like hes usuing straight up need bandages or those things docs use to hold a gash closed... which im pretty sure, growing up in a house with a doctor, that its the same deal

ps... that says breathable

i've just watched the videos, ive got the DVD. It clearly says masking tape or micropore. Also yet the video shows incoulation through the tape. But at no point is the foil put back on.

You dont need to retape after inoculation.

That tape looks fine, its breathable. all it does is help stop water get into your jars along with your foil during sterilisatio.

I've had jars sit out in the open on my coffee table without the foil on, without any problems.

yep yep
i take 2 pieces of tape off. my holes are too big and i had to stop fruiting in jar.but 4 pieces of tape slow my colonization at around 50%. i also use needle right thought the tape so there is a hole there

Well consider the fact that its the end of day 3 and my jars ALL have myc... ill leave the "bad tape" on.. and what wrong with taking extra measures for sanitation... im clearly doing something right...

With the pf tek the dry vermiculite layer serves as your contam barrier, and your foil is used to keep excess water out during pressure cooking, if you dont have enough GE your jars will stall, for example the next jars you do, do half with the foil on tape on and lid tight, and the other half with the foil on lid tight and tape on, and you will see an extreme differance between the to in colonization rate.(steralize as normal) If your having issues with your jars fruiting before birthing and you think its the FAE, dont loosen your lids so much,or make smaller holes for inoc.

You guys seem to think i have a problem with my colonization, from what ive seen its going ahead of schedual... nothing will be changed. and for the record 2 of the 7 are setup differently from the rest and arnt showing any signs of life, one has 2 holes, nothing on it, and the other has bandaid and no foil... also doesnt seem to be showing... oddly

You wouldn't notice a ge problem till they bout halfway colonized or more because there is air in the jar to start with. So, of course they're doing fine.

You might be right. The stuff might be breathable. But if the jars stall later, take it off.

I know it seems strange that the pf tek is wrong. But it is.

And the lack of growth in some could suggest you didn't shake the syringe good enough before you inoculated.

I dont think its strange at all that its wrong, its a lowcost noob tek, almost every step can be replaced with just about anything... im choosing to stick with a sterile theme.
