Pinning before full colinization

Hey everyone.
I'm doing the PF tek with p. cubensis (1st time grower), and I inoculated 6 1/2 pint jars a little over a month ago. The jars haven't finished colonizing (probably at 80% now), but I'm seeing small pins starting to appear. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves, but I'm not sure weather to birth and dunk them now, or wait until more mycelium appears. Thanks for the help.

Light exposure is not a problem. You might have some sort of infection in the jars. The myc will pin early if it thinks it might lose to a competing bacteria (or fungus?)

it is not light that dose not matter. it is uaually a sign of contamination.

Well I keep them in a dark closet, so they shouldn't really be getting any light.
Looking again at the jars, I notice that two of them might be contaminated. 4 of them look completely healthy, but the other 2 have a small (extremely small) yellow-green patch on the bottom of the jar. I'll upload some pics:
The contam in question is extremely small, I don't know if you can really see it in the pics.

It's funny, because the 4 jars without the possible contaminant are pinning more than the ones with it. Can anyone tell if it really is contaminated? I kept thinking that they were just beginnings of more pins, but it might actually by a contam.

Well they are mostly colonized, but if I look at the bottom of the jar, on some I can still see the uncolonized vermiculite substrate. I'll post a pic in a second.

They look colonized mostly at the top, but when you look underneath, the bottoms don't look done yet- as you can see in the second picture:
Do you think I should birth/dunk them now, or wait a bit more?

birth them. when you get them out of the jar use a sterilized knife to cut the uncolonized parts off each. i would use alcohol to re-sterilize the knife between cakes. and then dunk, roll etc.

ok, I'll go ahead and birth them. Thanks for your help. I'm going to separate out those 2 jars that seem questionable and put them in 2 different fruiting chambers just as a precaution.

RR stresses that full colonization is of the available substrate in other words, the portion that isn't colonized may be too wet and dense, or have bacteria in it. In both cases, the myc will just run up against it as if it was glass. If you cut off the uncolonized portion and cover the exposed area with dry verm, I think you will be surprised at how quickly myc spreads over it -- probably within a day or two.
Also, those spots on the bottoms of your jars look like mycelium byproducts to me, not contams.

Ok, I just finished birthing the cakes. I'm dunking them now, and then I'll roll and fruit in the morning. I used a sterile knife and cut away the parts that hadn't colonized (I think you were right about having too much moisture because some parts were soggy). Thanks again for all your help.
