Mixing spawn!
    #11136781 -

What up, this is a two part question?

So check it out. I just finished my g2g transfers and have 2 B+, and one Koh Samui pint jar.

I was wondering if you could mix two strains in the same tray? 2B+ and 1KS for ex.

And if you think three pint jars is enough to fill an aluminum baking tray.

so you have 3 pints of fully colonized spawn? 2b+ and one KS?

the two distinctly different cultures will colonize the sub at different speeds, different temps, different patterns, etc

its probably not a great idea to mix spawn of different strains

and what size is your baking tray? how much substrate are you working with also?

Really.  Damn, this upsets me. Well what about just using two b+ pints in one aluminum baking pan. Do you think that would be enough spawn for a whole tray.

Its the big rectangle aluminum pan.

And I have three pints of colonized rye.

use trays that work for the amounts of spawn/sub you have

two pints is PLENTY for a 1'sq(roughly) baking tray

so your remaining pint would be plenty for one of those....8"pie tins...

Just curious. What are the benefits of using more spawn?

Is itt bigger fruits?

More flushes?

Both?

So if two pints is big enough for a big tray. Then one quart would be plenty as well. If thats the case. I've been using more spawn in my trays then necessary.

both, more nutrients, faster colonization, etc

what size is ur tray? around that 1'sq mark?

1 quart. 2 pints. 3 brf cakes

all sound like enough

if you had to guess on your previous trays, whats your spawn to sub ratio?

more spawn takes less time to colonize the sub. the more spawn that you have, then the more contact points are available for the spawn to be touched by

no worries bruddah

your colonization times might be a little slower, but i think at some point the super high spawn rates become counter productive

have you ever tried to fruit cased grain?
the mushrooms are tiny, and pinset is kinda lame

of course the more spawn you use, the faster your colonization will be, but the result will be small fruits and mediocre flushes

3:1 or 2:1 seems like the perfect ratios

being 3/2 parts of substrate
      1/1 part spawn

no, 1 part spawn.

so a 3:1 would be (and the sizes can vary. as not everyone will have quart jars, or filterpatch bags etc.)

3quarts of sub to: 1quart of spawn(colonized grain, brf cakes, etc.)

smaller?
3 cups of sub to: 1 1/2 pint brf jar

larger?
6quarts of sub to: 2quarts of spawn

etc etc

casing is a layer of hydrated medium applied over a fully colonized substrate to help induce pinning and keep moisture in/around the fruiting area

maybe this explains why on my previous grow it would dry out so quickly. hmmm. well i think im gonna do a 2:1 ratio. but i cant decide between coir/verm 50/50 or miracle grow moisture control/verm 50/50 casing.

the reason the guy had a bad pinset and lil mushies was jus casing the grain. instead it the grain should have spawned and then cased, which he might have but didn't say. grains by their self don't hold alot of nutritional value, hence the reason they are spawned to coir or manure.

MONK-->the ratios he provided are for mixing your colonized grain with shit/compost not casing material- your casing layer shouldn't be more than a half inch thick and evenly spread. from reading the thread it seemed like ideas got crossed but if im wrong please ignore me

Re: Mixing spawn! [Re: FlyingMonk]

sounds good to me (as long as you are pasteurizing the mgmc and hydrated verm) but it appears that in anakins experience, he says he gets small mushies with just cased grain- in my experience they turn out just fine-2-4 inches tall- 3 quarts of cased grain for me would yield about 1 and 1/2 OZ dry, -acceptable- <----but mixing your grain with a compost or manuare and then case- gives out a weighty flush -3 quarts of grain mixed with 6 quarts of manuare for me will yield about 4-5 OZ dry easy-with larger fruits-4-6inches and a lot of the time you get a few monsters way bigger. you can do just fine with what you have IMO- but once you start mixing in manuare, you wont look back.

most important part of all that---> "you can do just fine with what you have "

Re: Mixing spawn! [Re: FlyingMonk]

you can do that but most mix it to get the myc to toch the sub so it colonizes faster less chance of contams if you layer it then make the layers thin your first time till you get the hang of it.

MAN this thread got confused

flyingmonk, you said:
Quote:

your spawn is your myceliated grain. your colonized grain
your substrate is your bulk growing medium (manure, coco coir, straw, etc.)
your casing is a layer of "non nutritional" hydrated medium you apply over your substrate once fully colonized

you spawn your grain to your substrate, allow full colonization, and case(casing)if you choose.

if you do it the way youve stated above "casing over spawn" youll have weak flushes

anakin, grains are nutrient PACKED, they lack enough moisture to fruit big

so would coir/verm 5050 be conisdered substrate or would it be just coir.

Re: Mixing spawn! [Re: FlyingMonk]

coir/verm makes a good SUBSTRATE mix, and ALSO works well as a casing, coco coir is a strange creature.

you can use it as substrate to spawn your colonized grains to because it has nutritional value to the mycelium.

or you can use it as a casing, which works, but isnt recommended because the fact that the mycelium will treat it as substrate. maybe a late casing of coir would be more beneficial

but optimally you want your casing to be non nutritional. like verm and mgmc...

i mean everything probably has some nut value to the myc, but its less likely to try and continue feeding when using casings like mgmc/verm, as apposed to something like coir which it will continue colonizing.

is am i confused?

i like to hydrate my coir first a little to break it up
then i mix my coir, verm, etc (i usually add a lot of udda stufs) into a clean 5 gallon bucket.
pour in enough boiling water to submerge all the sub.
cover with lid.
let cool.
pour into a paint strainer, and juice it till you have correct moisture content.

squeeeeeeeeeze....you can bear hug the bag full of poop(coir in your case, i just like huggin bags of poo) a few times, and it seems to be around the right moisture content

yeah mix your sub and your spawn in their designated tray/tub/etc

i find it works well to dump your "Field Capacity"(search this if you dont know about it) substrate into the container first, then add your grains, then mix throughout evenly. try and make the mix as level as possible for a nice even pinset.

wear gloves ifn you wantn

it also helps to have all your jars shaken and the grains broke apart B4 dumping ur sub in, that way your spawning is quick. bang bang
