Birch polypore and sulpher shelf
    #11132887 - 09/26/09 05:43 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Today's finds.
I think I've got Piptoporus betulinus and chicken mushroom

This is my first chicken. Does it look edible?
I found it on a tree so old I can't tell what kind it was.

I would like to try eating these too.
I heard I should peel them:

That looks like birch polypore to me. I found some of those last week. I cut off the top brown area then cut it up and dried it. I haven't made any tea or anything with it yet though

Those birch polypores were all over the place.
I could have harvested 20 lb.

The chicken is at least 8lb. and I left half of it there.
(Glutons are not favored by the mushroom gods.)

The chicken looks too old... but you could probably still use it for soup stock. try cooking up a little bit and see how dry it is.

Yeah, it was kind of dry. Like buffet chicken that spent half the day under a heat lamp.

But not bad flavor. I just seasoned it with a bit of salt & pepper but it had a sort of lemony flavor, and a slight bitter aftertaste.
