If you think hip hop is dead, then you sir, are a fool
    #11131103 -

Lots of people think hop hop is done, that after the 90's everything went to shit. Sure there are underground heads who will preach about Deltron, MF DOOM, and Jedi Mind Tricks all day, but I'm talking about mainstream rap.
Of course there's garbage (and a lot of it), but radio stations and music channels are starting to realize that everyone's tired of "club rap" and because of that, they're giving new and talented artists play time and exposure. Here's a few quality artists with mainstream appeal that are making it.

Jay Electronica - Eternal Sunshine

J. Cole - Dead Presidents II

Wale ft. CurrenSy - Wordplay

Jay Electronica - Exhibit A

I don't think hip hop is dead, I just think it's a very low form of art.  The focus is the vocal element, which is essentially a toneless drone(rap) about subjects that are usually an ego posturing of some sort.

The music is usually all canned, looped and sampled and leaves zero room for improvisation of any sort, other than vocally(see paragraph 1).  Not that there would be anyone to improvise since it's really all about "the rhymes".

And this music is supposed to be about rhythm but show me a "hip-hop" track in a non-duple time and I will be genuinely surprised.  It always utilizies only the most basic, tired rhythms possible.

and i was always like, come on, you gota listen to this shit maaaan!
but, it didnt take too long before i figured it out.  in the company of actualy conscious people listening to some real shit.

You obviously haven't heard anything decent if you think hip-hop consists of jacking off one's ego.

Quote:
I don't want no computer chip in my arm
I don't wanna die by a nuclear bomb
I say we all rush the pentagon, pull out guns
And grab the intercom, my first word's will be I believe
Man made God, outta ignorance and fear
If God made man, then why the hell would he put us here?
I thought he's supposed to be the all loving
The same God who let Hitler put the Jews in the oven
We don't fall for the regular shit, they try to feed us
All this half-ass leadership, flippin position
They turn politcian and shut the hell up and follow tradition
For your TV screen, is telling lies to your vision
Every channel got some brainwashed cop shit to watch
Running up in niggas cribs claiming that they heard shots
It's a plot, but busta can you tell me who's greedier?
Big corporations, the pigs or the media?
Sign of the times, terrorism on the rise
Commercial airplanes, falling out the sky like flies
Make me wonder what secrets went down with Bob Brown (?)
Who burnt churches to the ground with no evidence found?
It's not coincidence, it's been too many studied incidents
It coulda been the Klan who put that bomb at the Olympics
But it probably was the FBI, deep at the call
Cuz if they make us all panic then they can start martial law

EDIT: thats not directed at you deadphan sorry

My turn...

There's something in the way she moves
That attracts me like no other lover
Something in the way she moves me
I don't want to leave her now
You know I believe in how

There's something in the way she smiles
And all I have to do is think of her
Something in the way she smiles for me
I don't want to leave her now
You know I believe in how

Your asking me will my love grow
I don't know, no I don't know
Just stick around and let it show
I don't know, oh I don't know

There's something in the way she moves
That attracts me like no other lover
Something in the way she moves me

You know I believe in how

Oh wow, some lyrics about conflict and conspiracy.  Nothing new here, just keep reinforcing the themes of paranoia and victimhood.

And I don't care how great you think the lyrics are, it doesn't change the fact that they're essentially delivered in monotone.

I'd say when you have "music" that is vocally focused, but the vocals are toneless, the result can only be be low quality at best.

it sounds to me that you have a limited scope of what "music" is.  for many, it's not all simply about tonality and harmonies.  with hip hop, there's wordplay and flow and rhythm and rhyme scheme.  if it's not for you, well then it's not.  but to dismiss it as a lesser music simply because you aren't capable of appreciating it is rather ignorant.

Gee, so...the vocals and lyrics are the focus, yet the quality of the voice doesn't matter at all?  It sounds like it's your taste in music which is the fail.

And I didn't even mention the quality of a person's voice, I said the quality of the music is in question since it is vocally focused music but there is little to no melodic content in the delivery of the vocals.

For me hip hop is like 60% beats and 40% lyrics. You can't have a good rap song without a good beat behind it. And these beats might be more intricate than you think, the art of sampling is a whole nother can of worms. My favorite type of music ever is actually "instrumental hip hop". Beats ya dig?

I listened to them all, for the most part.  My gripe really isn't so much with the lyrics as it is the predictable, repetitive and generally non adventurous nature of the music.  Those last two tracks you posted, the second was definitely better and almost interesting, if not for the way it's predictably sequenced out and never really goes anywhere.

"Beats".  When someone says that I basically know how it's going to sound before I even hear it.  And it's always either a four or eight beat measure isn't it?  It's a "safe" form of music like "punk" or most electronic dance music.  You don't have to adapt your expectations or taste at all to get into it.

I like some industrial stuff like KMFDM, which is similar to hip-hop in a lot of ways.  But considering most of the other music I like, I consider KMFDM to be near bottom of the barrel musically.  And I think KMFDM is heaps more creative and musical than most hip hop I've ever heard.

I sort of see your point, and from a certain perspective there isn't a whole lot of variety to it, but I think it's just about appreciating certain aspects of it that you probably either just don't get or have gotten bored of after switching to more adventurous styles. I listened to it while growing up but have since gotten more into psychedelia rock and the more aggressive forms of punk which border on metal, but aren't quite incoherent screaming. I'm also finding a lot of the older classical music from all the famous composers really interesting.

If you are good at concealing laughter and contempt, you should ask a white person about “Real Hip Hop.”  They will quickly tell you about how they don’t listen to “Commercial Hip Hop” (aka music that black people actually enjoy), and that they much prefer “Classic Hip Hop.”

“I don’t listen to that commercial stuff. I’m more into the Real Hip Hop, you know?  KRS One, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, De La Soul, Wu Tang, Tupac, Biggie, you know, The Old School.”

Calling this style of music ‘old school’ is considered an especially apt name since the majority of people who listen to it did so while attending old schools such as Dartmouth, Bard, and Williams College.

What it all comes down to is that white people are convinced that if they were alive when this music was relevant that they would have been into it.  They would have been Alan Lomax or Rick Rubin.  Now the best they can hope for is to impress an older black person with their knowledge.

Among the wrong kind of white people, there are few more hated than the wigger or whitethug. Though it is very acceptable and common for the right kind of white people to dress and act as though they were Japanese, Chinese, or European, it is completely unacceptable for them to act like rappers.

This distaste caused a dilemma for white people who had to show both that they loved hip hop but also that they were aware they were white. The brilliant solution they came up with was to appropriate hip hop words and mannerisms and filter them through a white appropriateness system.

For example, white people find it particularly hilarious to take slang and enunciate every word perfectly.

“Homey, that bernaise sauce you made is wack. Do you know what I am saying? For Real.”

“Well, I used a different type of butter. I switched the style up, so let the haters hate and I’ll watch the deliciousness pile up.”

Since the above exchange involves people who are very aware of their whiteness it is hilarious, but if it were to be said by wiggers, it would be tragic. The difference is subtle but essential.

This is also an excellent way to make white people like you. If you can recite rap lyrics with perfect enunciation, they will always find it funny. As a rule of thumb, the more popular the rapper, the funnier it gets. Best options: 50 Cent, Tupac, Biggie Smalls, or Jay Z. Note: avoid Kanye West as the irony of reciting his lyrics with perfect English is not as great.

In terms of physical actions, there are few things white people enjoy more than throwing up fake gang signs in photos. Again, the same rules apply: if it is done by wiggers it is tragic, if it’s done by the right kind of white people, it’s hilarious. It’s not a good idea to mention how these signs have often resulted in awful, senseless deaths– that will ruin the joke.

In both cases, the actions are done in hopes that a white person will be recognized as “one of the good ones,” who love hip hop, but don’t try to appropriate it in any non-hilarious ways.

In both cases, your best response is to say “did you go to the last Dead Prez/Roots/Mos Def/Twaleb Kwali/Michael Franti concert? It was incredible. I smoked weed and kept this one finger up for almost an hour!”

Though this information has very little use in and of itself, it could be the final piece in the puzzle of cementing your white friendship. At the very least, it is a guaranteed way to help your progress.

If you are good at concealing laughter and contempt, you should ask a white person about Real Hip Hop.  They will quickly tell you about how they dont listen to Commercial Hip Hop (aka music that black people actually enjoy), and that they much prefer Classic Hip Hop.

I dont listen to that commercial stuff. Im more into the Real Hip Hop, you know?  KRS One, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, De La Soul, Wu Tang, Tupac, Biggie, you know, The Old School.

Calling this style of music old school is considered an especially apt name since the majority of people who listen to it did so while attending old schools such as Dartmouth, Bard, and Williams College.

What it all comes down to is that white people are convinced that if they were alive when this music was relevant that they would have been into it.  They would have been Alan Lomax or Rick Rubin.  Now the best they can hope for is to impress an older black person with their knowledge.

It's music, if you get involved in the drama in it........

I don't pay attention to who likes who......and i def don't choose sides.......it's fuckin music

Not to "diss" you are anything..........

Anticon is hip hop for the further development of INTELLIGENT hip hop.  For the most part that label is trying to kill all the negativity in rap, and turn it into something postive and non violent.

There's no way a thread should go this long with no mention of Cunninlynguists or Edan.

Viveka said:
I listened to them all, for the most part.  My gripe really isn't so much with the lyrics as it is the predictable, repetitive and generally non adventurous nature of the music.  Those last two tracks you posted, the second was definitely better and almost interesting, if not for the way it's predictably sequenced out and never really goes anywhere.

I think Tame One, specifically his "newer" shit, uses pretty unique and "adventurous" style in his music.

Quote:
"Beats".  When someone says that I basically know how it's going to sound before I even hear it.  And it's always either a four or eight beat measure isn't it?  It's a "safe" form of music like "punk" or most electronic dance music.  You don't have to adapt your expectations or taste at all to get into it.

If you're the type who thinks complexity is what makes music good then just say it. Time will be saved and we'll understand that you're close-minded and foolish.

It would be pretty hard to pull of a good song that isn't in some simple 4 time. The way to make it interesting is using accents, flow, phrases, whatever to create a different feel without changing the time.

However since it's still in 4 I guess it's not complex.

Hey guys... saw this thread so I think I'd chime in...

http://www.savagewonderland.com/GO_ASK_ALICE_/Podcast/Entries/2009/8/25_By_any_means.html

this a podcast of a newly formed group from kansas by the name of GO ASK ALICE..  they recently played a show opening for atmosphere in wichta and this is the video from it... PLEASE watch the whole thing as it is edited so it shows portions of different songs throughout the video..  i think its about 10 minutes long.. but there is about two minutes in the middle that i suggest skipping for the conversation's sake (it has two dudes talking and driving in a car)

seriously check this out please..  it is HIP HOP from wichita, kansas + a live band

also if u watch till the very end there is a surprise (slug) ending

EDIT: btw.. the music starts at about 2:10 into the vid..

Well, if tonnes of people like the particular chef, you're going to look like a douchette trying to criticize him. You can't objectively prove that he sucks, as people's taste in food varies just as their taste in music does. When it comes to art, saying something just sucks period instead of admitting that it's just not your thing is just phaggotry, unless it's totally obvious that the artist/practitioner/whatever doesn't know the first thing about whatever he's doing.

Theophilus London - his mixtape "This Charming Mixtape" has a heavy electronica influence.

Fashawn - His debut album just came out. He's one of CA's up and commers. He can definitely rhyme but Im not a fan of his voice.

Sene - I really don't know much about this guy but his new album was entirely produced by Blu, who is an excellent MC (lots of him on the mix I posted above). Pretty smooth song, great chilling music.

I love picking up and identifying samples in hip hop. If you listen to a wide variety of music then you'll undoubtedly recognize tons of them.

See if anyone knows this piano/vocal sample used in this first video (the vocals come in around 1:06). Check to see if you're correct in the 2nd one
