Pearly barly grain
    #1112970 - 12/05/02 10:24 AM (14 years, 1 day ago)

Well I have had enough of brw as all i get is week shrooms and i am unable to get rye grain so i am using Pearly barly grain. What i did was let the grain soke in water for about 2 hours then drained it till it was slightly moist then simply PC it for an hour. I have just incoculated it with a mycelium syringe and it seem ok all the grain is lose and not sticking together. So has any one had any experience with this grain and what is the typical yield/problems. Also would you say this is a good method.

I`ve used barley before and it proved to be totaly useless.
I might have not pced it long enough or made a mistake along the lines but my test jar didn`t even make it to innoculation.
I left it for 5 days to ensure a clean, sterile jar
it got totally colonised by a wide variaty of contamination.
But there are too many factors to take into account.
I personally prefer millet over any substrate.

Ok I just thought i would give an update on this grain, I inoculated it about 5/6 this month and so far the mycelium has took over the grain about 40% and it seem to bee doing pretty well. This seems to be working alot better than with millet. So far I would reccomend this grain.

I was unable to get rye until just the other day. I checked out the health food store and found that they had organic whole grain rye for $.92 a pound. Seems like the barley would get too mushy!

Well It could of got too mush but I let it sit in water for about two hours drained it with a sive and used paper towel to absorbed additional moisture then p.c it.
Seem to be working really well, i had to try the stuff cos i cant find rye anywhere i have tryed everywhere guess its just my location.
