Non-Bluing Woodland Psilocybe(?)
    #11127297 - 09/25/09 06:22 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

While in Lincoln City, OR for a job interview i was walking a, whats appeared to be, somewhat frequently used Trail that ran through an Woodland Area of Coastal rainforest with many Spruce and Doug-fir and false chanterelles. I saw this guy about 3 feet off the trail.

Habitat:
Woodland Area of Coastal rainforest with many Spruce and Doug-fir growing out of Coniferous Debris.

Gills:
Color was around the same shade of Brown as the Cap. Not a deep deep brown though. Attachment was Adnate.

Stem:
Light browish, but Significanly darker at the base. Not quite black but dark. with fine fibrillose spots more prominent towards the base. Fairly fragile, splitting at base.
Cap:
Caramel Brown, with Straw coloring in the center, Sticky, Hygrophanous, Translucent-Striated margin, with easily seperable Gelatinous Pellicle.

Spore print color:
By the time i returned to where i could print him it was hard. I left him under a moistened glass all night. When i checked there wasnt much but a fine purplish dusting the was so faint i almost hesitate to mention it.
Bruising:
Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.
The dark region of the stem got hint of purple, most likely just from handling. However no Bluing Noticed.

Other information:
Found under a spruce in woodlands and does not at all appear like Silvatica or Pelliculosa the species i would expect to see in that type of forest setting. However the trail did provide a disturbed habitat.

The closest match i can find is Psilocybe physaloides. Forgot to say there was a Fibrillose annular zone.

Doesn't appear to be a Psilocybe due to the light colored gills which appear to be somewhat mature.  You could check further with a microscope.

I tried to save the specimen for that reason but, he didnt survive the bus home.I agree, the gills are light for a Psilocybe. But when i saw the Pellicle, gill attachment, the cap coloration and translucent-straited margin i didnt know what to think. Any ideas as to what family or Genus it might belong to. I got nothin.
P.S. Not trying to make this somethin its not, but the gill color is very similar to that of the picture of ,i think, Psilocybe Subviscada, in PMOTW. Ill make sure thats the pic though.

I'm guessing the spore print would be rusty brown, by the look of the gills.  Those are probably Galerina marginata.
