you should just assume you are always being watched, if you look back at some of the declassified govt programs of the 60's-80's and see how messed up some of those were, I can't imagine what kind of fucked up things our governments are subjecting us to now.

Well, the government owns us, so we have no business disrespecting and/or contradicting them.

@bumpn
You pretty much said what I was going to. One thing though. Last time I checked the platters were metallic, not plastic. Of course these days, the drive could be a solid state so then all you got is microchips.
I'm surprised no one mentioned "DarkNuke" of "KillDisk". They overwrite every bit of a drive with random 0's and 1's for as many passes as you tell it to.
Backtrack linux is a good distro to use. Live version, MAC spoofing, and built in proxy options.

Netstat only shows open connections. It would be great if the DEA put a rootkit on you, but doesn't do anything for eaves dropping. All anyone needs to eaves drop is a connection between you and the destination that the web traffic is moving through.
the links at http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5677879p should point you in the right direction as to keep anyone from being able to monitor your traffic (well, at least not anything they can gather other than what is encrypted).

lol. I can tell you for a fact they really are metallic. I honestly never bothered to find out what composite, but it's a metal. They are fun to throw around and play with, but if you open a hard drive you are going to ruin it. They are vacuumed and cleaned better than any lab we could dream of. You open it and IF it even works after, it WILL fail with time. I am an IT consultant and have personally tried this one. Wait until a drive fails then open it, or find a pawn shop or something. PC hardware has gotten so cheap that I had to get into satellite and network tech to survive.
Oh yeah, I am very new here as most can easily see. Love the site. I will be around for a long while and hope to not annoy many people. I usually just lurk the threads and learn all I can for my own "experiments".

That is a common rumor and it is true that they work on drives in clean rooms, but...
Once one of my hard drives failed, wouldn't spin up. I took it apart in my dirty basement shop room, to the point where the platters and heads were exposed to open air and dust. I put a drop of oil on the drive shaft which fixed the not spinning issue. Put it back togeather and it worked great after that for many years.
I am not sure what the plates are made of, but it is a brittle metal alloy.

If you want something destroyed, use thermite.
Mix equal parts aluminum and iron oxide dust (by weight), ignite with a magnesium strip. It'll melt pretty much anything other than moly and tungsten.
