Metal Frame Filter Question
    #11121609 -

Hello there,

Many homemade horizontal flowhoods that people make, are made with particle board. The Flowhood box (where the blower sits) is then constructed using screws and caulk.

Suppose you have a galvanized steel framed hepa filter. How would you go about constructing the box?  Would you still use plywood and caulk?

I've been searching the site but can't seem to come up with any answers.

Yes you still have to build the box. I used plywood not particle board. 7 layer 3/4 inch.

You don't use any adhesive to hold it in, at least I did not on mine. I bought the FP filter which has a small gasket on one end. This is the end that goes against a wood furring strip inside the boc. This is screwed into the sides at around 6 inches inside the box to keep the filter from going any further in. Then held in by edge trim on the outside screwed to the wood. This compresses the filter against the furring strips on the inside, which makes a seal. Plus the strip on the inside is silicone caulked around, as well as every other joint and meeting in the box to keep air inside inside and air outside outside. I will write up my build this weekend. ALOT of pics, i think around 50 or 60, as well as step by step and all deminsions to each peice of wood and components used.

Im not familiar with FP's filter. so your hepa didn't come framed, just with a gasket?  Mine is completely in a metal frame. However there are no headers that will allow me to screw it into wood. Do you think I could just use silicone as an adhesive between the steel frame
and plywood?

12X24 HEPA's usually come 3 different ways. Particle Board Frame, Galavanized Steel Frame, and Stainless steel frame. I've seen members of the community that use Steel framed HEPA's, however I'm confused on how they adhere the box to the filter, because you cant drill screws into steel.

So I was wondering how people construct their flowhoods when they use a steel framed filter opposed to one made of particle board.
