My Home-Made Flowhood Tek * 2
    #11120537 - 09/24/09 05:07 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I've wanted one of these damn things forever. For some time now, I've been searching options/prices for a pre-built flowhood, and debating whether or not I wanna shell out that amount of cash... I'm very ingenuiative, and ENJOY a good project, so I decided I would tackle the task of building a flowhood head-on.

I took more pictures so I would have to explain less. Plus, I don't know about you, but I learn something more fluently when I visually have something to look at that depicts the topic.

Ok, for some general/technical info:

Match a blower to the filter:
Once you decided on the size of the HEPA filter, you have to match a suitable blower to this particular filter. This is a very important step, so make sure to study the directions thoroughly.

Every filter has a "resistance" when air blows through it at a certain speed, this resistance is called the "static pressure".

Press your hand against your mouth. Now try to blow through it. Depending on how firm you press it against your mouth, you will have some difficulties blowing air out and you will feel some resistance, this is the static pressure.

Every filter has a different static pressure at the working point. The working point is where the amount of the air flowing through the filter is sufficient to meet the requirement of the laminar flow.

The static pressure is expressed in inch of water column in the English units, a typical value would be 1", the SI unit for pressure is Pa(Pascal).

1" water column is around 250 Pa. Each filter has a data sheet (consult the manufacturer if this is not the case with your filter) where the static pressure at the working point is entered. Before the air enters the blower it is usually pre-filtered by a furnace filter around 1"(2.5cm) thick placed in front of the blower to protect it and the HEPA filter from big particles like dust and hairs. It can be assumed that the static pressure for this prefilter at the working point is around 0.2"(50 Pa)

According to Stamets (Paul Stamets and J.S.Chilton: The Mushroom Cultivator p. 347 ff) the air speed of the air flowing from the filter surface should be (at least) 100 feet per minute(fpm).(around 30 meter per minute or 0.5 meter per second). Determining the correct blower for a filter consists of several steps:

1. Find out the area of your filter by multiplying the width and the height in feet (for instance the smallest reasonably usable filter would be 2ft x 1ft)

2ft x 1ft = 2 ft2
2. Multiply the required air speed(the one Stamets specifies, 100 ft/min) with the area of your filter

100 ft/min x 2 ft2 = 200 ft3/min
So 200 ft3/min(= cfm = "cubic feet per minute") is the amount of air your blower must deliver at the sum of the STATIC PRESSURE of the HEPA filter + prefilter.

NOTE: 1 cfm= 1.7m3/h

So if you use the above filter with 1"(250Pa) static pressure and a furnace prefilter with a static pressure of 0.2"(50Pa) your blower must deliver 200 cfm(340m3/h) of air at a static pressure of 1.2"(300Pa).

Here is the specs, on the mechanics and items I so very carefully chose, and some blue-prints I drew/sketched up before I started:

Blower:

Pre-Filter:

H.E.P.A:

You might be thinking that this blower is a lil too large for my H.E.P.A filter but I opted for a smaller micron pre-filter to increase my H.E.P.A's life-expectancy, so I needed a lil more power.

You may have noticed on the blue-prints: My plan for a UV sterilization lamp in the middle chamber. In the event of 0.03% of the time a contam particle might slip through the filter, I will have assurance that it will be rendered inert by the UV-C lamp. :hehehe: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C rays are types of light most commonly related with sun rays. UV-A are the majority of the type we come in contact with outside, because the o-zone blocks out 97% of UV-B, and UV-C rays. UV-B&C rays are what gives us sunburns, and aids the skin in producing vitamin D. The radiation excites DNA molecules in skin cells, causing aberrant covalent bonds to form between adjacent cytosine bases, producing a dimer. When DNA polymerase comes along to replicate this strand of DNA, it reads the dimer as "AA" and not the original "CC". This causes the DNA replication mechanism to add a "TT" on the growing strand. This is a mutation, which can result in cancerous growths and is known as a "classical C-T mutation".

You may think that this light outright kills the contams in the air, but it more so scrambles there DNA in a way that stops them from reproducing and speeds there lifespan up with a cancerous DEATH !!!

I found a special light-bulb replacement for a UV air sanitizer/filter and improvised on an outlet so I could implement it into my project. Here is the light-bulb, its specs, and the outlet of choice:

Its prolly not advised to come in any amount of contact with the rays from this light, so that last pic was a no,no, but a brief pic duration can't hurt.. (Hopefully)

Wood Construction:
I cut out the walls, then wood glued the corner support frame pieces into place. Each piece individually till I had all the walls ready to put together like a puzzle. Later adding screws for more support.

Starting with the top:

Then the center blower mounting wall:

I decided to add a house type toggle switch to the side to turn the blower/UV light on/off via the switch instead of a manual plug in, then it comes on. A lil more custom, and a lil more of a wiring headache, but how this projects is playing out in my head, I'm already going the extra mile.

The Pre-Filter wall:

Then I cut the wall/frame to the H.E.P.A filter:

With the square of wood that came out from the center of the H.E.P.A filter wall/frame, I used to fabricate a lip for the pre-filter to rest against when its being sucked down by the blowers suction, and added the corner support frames:

While wondering through Home Depot, I came across the Glass section, and it struck me with an idea. I came to the conclusion that this UV lamp was pretty expensive ($50 total) so why not get more use from it by adding a inset piece of glass so I can use those rays to sanitize other things like Agar dishes, ect... So, here is the top sheets construction with routed hole for the sheet of glass:

At this point I was ready to start putting this puzzle together. I started off with the bottom, a side, and the middle blower mounting wall:

Now that I have a strong chunk of the apparatus put together, I can now do most of the wiring.

Wiring:
I bought a heavy duty extension cord with a ground-wire to link the flowhood components to an outlet. I first striped the two wires coming out of the blower like this:

Folded the wire over at the stripped point, twisted it, and added a crimpable wire connector like this:

I then ran the extension cord wires into the blower wiring component box, connected the ground, connected the corresponding blower wires to the extension-cord wires via the crimpable wire connectors, and added more connectors at the end of the un-sheathed wire tips ready to accept the UV lamps wires:

All closed up looked like this:

Then I mounted the blower/UV lamp, and connected most of the wires for this point:

I decided to add a reflective metallic paint to the UV chamber. Figured it might aid the effectiveness of the lamp, and turn it into a UV microwave of contam DEATH!

I thought It would be useful to have a work light inside the housed work chamber, so I took the time at this point to plan its location, and then run the wire for it so I could complete the wiring before moving on.

Completing the wiring looks undescriptive, but all I can say is it allows me to operate the work light separately from turning the blower/UV light on/off. I can have the blower/UV light turned off wile using the work light for whatever opportunity that might be useful in <Shrug>. Because the work light has its own on/off switch. sealing the deal with a fancy decor metal light switch cover.

I then kinda sealed the whole thing in by adding the other side wall, and the top, REMEMBER: all of the seams need to be airtight, so the wood-glue along-side some silicone is key.

Yeah, yeah, ...she looks pretty ugly right now, but we will give her a face-lift later. I sanded down any crude impurities, hard edges, and filled all gaps, holes, and dents with some wood filler:

Next I worked directly with the H.E.P.A filter and the housed work chamber. I cut the outlet for the filter extra tight, I had to actually get a hammer to bang it in there real snug, sealing the edges with a liberal amount of silicone. Then I added trim to stylishly support the corners and add something to screw into. Figuring the occasional spray of liquids would prolly be flying around in the work chamber (Alcohol, bleach), I opted to coat the inside of the work area with a nice thick coat of high quality waterproof paint:

To pretty up the outside I added a lifetime guarantee, super durable, house enamel paint. Also, the whole apparatus was rather heavy so I added two metal decor handles for portability.

Then I siliconed in the piece of glass for the UV lamp chamber. Its hard to tell its there, so I put my hand over it so you can see its reflection in the glass:

Next I inserted the pre-filter, added a border of duct tape to assure the air will be sucked through the filter and not around the fittings edge gaps, and topping it off with a filter grill:

After adding some felt circlets to the bottom (So I don't damage furniture, or the flowhood when setting it on tables, ect.), here she is in all of her glory:

OH, ...and one last thing ! It doesn't go completed without its branding...

Hope y'all enjoy !

:bye:

Why did you go so cheap on the H.E.P.A ? They last 5-10 years, so it could have paid for its self.

 it was about$70. Blocks 99.97% @ 0.03 microns. Pretty run of the mill when searching flowhood info. There are those huge filters for flow-hoods you see scientists using and shit, but is that REALLY necessary ?

I would say, my sub-par run of the mill H.E.P.A paired with the UV-C lamp is prolly better/just as good as one of those filters alone. I feel confident I have something that will work as intended to, and have years and years of uses. One of these Hunter filters is said to last a year with being run 24/7. This isn't factored in having a prefilter to block out most larger particles, and the fact that it will only be ran for a few hrs every so often, not 24/7.
