You have a lot of research to do: google the NAC.
I came up with about 20+ things that were abbreviated "NAC" when I googled it.

yeah they exist lol. the Native American Church has over 200,000 members in north America. Its not as uncommon as you might think.
I am fortunate enough to have a friend from a city two hours away. He is really a neat person and he has his own branch of the church full registered with the state/federal government. They don't care about race, in fact they believe the medicine finds you and if it comes into your life its for a special reason.
Normally a ceremony is held in a tee pee or someone's house. It was my first time so i didn't just get thrown into the whole intensity of the tee pee ceremony. there are a lot of strict rules in the teepee and it requires not moving for very long periods of time and special etiquette. i will have to sit with just him and the medicine a few times before i go to the "real deal" so to speak.
He set up a space in his house for me and him. The central altar is held with fire (in this case candles) and a big, beautiful looking peyote button with many long tufts of hair called a "Chief". He burnt sage, and flat cedar, and we stated aloud our prayers and intentions(he was out of tobacco for this). Then he put in his ipod dock (lol i found this amusing) an ipod with peyote music. He shook his rattle and sang along as i cleaned, and ate the first 4 small buttons. by the time i had finished 7 buttons i was in this sleepy trance like state from the repetitive singing and music. The nausea set in and he kept telling me " if you want more the medicine is here for you. please eat as much as you feel the need to" but i couldn't imagine chewing another sandy, dirty, bitter, spicy dumpling.
The songs kept going and i found that they were all i could concentrate on. the nausea and colors didn't even matter. streaks of blue and green pastels were washing over everything in my vision. But it was like the songs were filling my perception more than anything. I couldn't sing along but i could see the music making patterns in the air and with my eyes closed. I got a lot of shivers and strange sensations followed by sudden flashes of visions like lightning flashing and clearing the night. I prayed and contemplated where my life was going. I knew that this medicine was going to help me but it was going to be a slow process getting to know it. I got really nasueas at one point and puked like crazy! i never puked like that on ayahausca. in the church they call it "getting well" and he said to me "man that sounded rough! you must have really been getting well brother! "
Late in the night he closed the space then allowed for us to walk around his land, conversate, and then eat some food before hitting the bed. i slept pretty easily except when i was violently awakened by shotguns going off all around his house like CRAZY. scared me shitless. i later found out dove season had started that morning lol.
all in all a beautiful experience and i hope to continue my relationship with this medicine into the future. i know much wasn't revealed to me as it was my first time and usually they say peyote is like a wild animal: it stays away at first and sizes you up, sees who you really are and what your heart is like. then when you keep eating it you purify and it comes a little closer until finally it reveals a great deal to you.
Will post a report of the ceremony this weekend when i get back. i plan on eating at least twice as many buttons this time. more medicine = more healing.

as long as the top is properly separated from the root i don't see a problem.
i talked with my friend about peyote declining and he said when he went to mexico to do pilgrimage with the Wixxarika (an indigenous group) and told them its endangered they laughed at him. its not going anywhere. the US population is like a vein, one that is sick. the real body of the peyote is deep in mexico.
ive been told in the real remote areas of the Chihuahuan desert, far away from cities and trails it grows in carpets. huge buttons with patches as far as the eye can see.

it is said that there used to be peyote as far north as new mexico and there were ones with different colors, shapes ect.
found this neat little tidbit about the legendary White Peyote button.
Quote:
from answers.com/nativeamericanchurch:
"The Fabled White Peyote of The Grand Canyon and Four Corners Area"
Archaeological discoveries in Arizona and Southern Texas indicate that peyote has been used by the Southwestern Tribes and their ancestors since antiquity. Peyote has been found carbon dated as 3,500 years old in caves in Southern Texas and Arizona. The mummified samples did not resemble modern peyote and were larger and more domed in comparison to modern populations of Lophophora williamsii. These samples also contained up to 6% mescaline by weight even after thousands of years in a desiccated state. Modern Lophophora varieties average 3% mescaline in comparison. The Dine (Navajo) oral traditions and those of other Southwest tribes indicate that a cold tolerant, high altitude variety of peyote existed in the area of the Grand Canyon in ancient times[citation needed], called "white peyote" which was rumored to be of cosmic potency.
Recent discoveries and botanical evidence indicates modern Lophophora species may in fact be divergent hybrids of Lophophora diffusa and a species recently named Lophophora brackii[citation needed], a high altitude domed "white" peyote with 'Z' patterns and articulated ribbing that originates from a single population confined to a mountain near Viesca, Mexico."
