HELP!

hey folks!

ok, well i just Inoculation my first jars and i need to find a nice of place to put them.  the
problem is that it's fall now and my house stays at a low 70f, so i'm not really sure where
i should put them to help Mycelial Growth.  does anyone have any suggestions??

also, since it's getting pretty cold around here, i've noticed that my terrariums tempature
has been dropping also.  it's currently down to 68 to 64f...i have a blanket over it and it
was helping a little but now the tempature is stuck around 68 to 64f.  does anyone know
what i can do??

i do have a heater in my house but it's really old and it doesn't do a very good  job at
keeping the whole house warm.  personally i don't think the heater does
anything...doesn't feel like it, at least.  i would just place my jar and the terrarium near
the heater but my bf doesn't want me to have it all out in the open(he's a little
paraniod).  also, i can't go out and buy a heating pat...i'm really short on cash.  so if
anyone can help me figure out this problem that would be awesome!!

in a box above your fridge...
for more ideas, try the the little white block in the upper right hand corner labeled "search"

As far as the FC.... I have mine in a closet with a small space heater at the bottom set at 70-75 degrees... works wonders. At that temp you can also incubate in the same closet.

Put your jars on a shelf out of DIRECT sunlight. Ambient sunlight or artificial lighting is okay. Cooler temps will slow mycelium growth but will not adversely effect your grow. Unless you live in an igloo, room temperature will suffice.

Get an inexpensive fish tank heater and place it into a jar of water in the terrarium?

Place the FC on top of your refrigerator?

Above the fridge works great.  Dont worry about a heating pad,  your temps are fine.

if the heater sucks put it in your room... where its best suited... and keep your mushies behind it  like off in a corner of the room

your gonna have to buy a heater of some sort, i suggest a new one for the house, and the old one goes to the mushies

Ehh..  Those are overrated and usually not necessary.

I say just put them on top of your fridge.  Get a thermometer to see what the temp is like up there.  As someone has already said, 70-75 works fine for incubation, though I'd want closer to 75 of course.  If you had the same jars colonizing at 75 and 80 degrees, you probably wouldn't notice much difference anyway.

For some they are I will agree. But I like to keep my house around 70. So I got one of those preset heaters from wal-mart that are set at 79 and they work great for my TiT. I know not for everyone, but hey, it does work. Guess I am old school.:shrug:

since your strapped for cash I'd suggest...

putting your jars back into the box they came in...
and putting that over the top of your frig, freezer or hot water heater.

you can also put them in the cabinet over the top of your stove or frig, if you have a cabinet there.

i'm not sure if putting the jars on top of my fridge will really do anything.  it feels like
room tempature up there.  and i don't know if my water heater will work either because
it's pretty cold to the touch.

i currently have it in wrapped up in a blanket inside a small bag on top of my fridge.  i
guess i'll wait another week and see if there's any progress.

agreed, dont waste your time or money with incubators, RR has done some extremely informative research concrening colonization temps, alot of people would  drasticly speed up there colonization rates if theyd quit trying to get there incubators at 86.

I think your temps are ok... it may just take a little longer to colonize.

Go to a pet store, buy a small fish tank heater ($10-20), take a 2L or 3L soda pop bottle, fill with water, put the heater in the water and place it next to your jars... the heater will keep the temps in the mid seventies...

and you won't need to worry about burning the house down.

correct, alot of times you ll see new growers trying to get there incubators or there temp outside there colonizing jars at/to 86 f. which is not optimal, i keep my closet i use for colonizing right at 75-77 or so, When i first started i read in numerous places that 86 degrees was supposed to be the perfect temp, then after reading some of RR's notes i kept one closet at the 75 and my other at 86, all jars in the 75 deg. closet were fully colonized a full week before the 86 deg. closet, B+ strain pf tek used for that experiment.

Yeah, there was a video going around some time ago which was telling people to incubate at 86F/30C. That same video also stated not to get the mushrooms wet. Things change over time.

Here's a cheap solution:

-cheap styrofoam box (u might have at home) US$ 10,00
-plastic bottle or plastic pot with lid - 2 liters capacity at least -  (u might have at home)
-aquarium thermostat/heater US$ 7,00
-cheap thermometer (u might have at home) US$ 5,00

Fill the bottle with water. Make a hole on the plastic lid of the bottle big enough to fit the aquarium thermostat/heater. Follow the instructions to calibrate the temperature, this part is the annoying part cause u have to babysit it using the thermometer to make sure the temperature is ok. Well, that's pretty much it, keep the box closed at all times to prevent heat loss. Good luck!

Dont incubate anything you run the risk of overheating, increase risks of contams, and waste ur time. A couple days saved in colonization time isnt worth any of that.

The only way you're going to get contams during incubation is if you screwed up the sterilization process, or your spores are contaminated.

Actually a at the least a small amount of bacteria is going to be introduced at some point due to the fact that all spores contain at least a small amount and people's procedures are generally less than perfect, a higher temp creates a more hospitable environment for this bacteria.
Also all contaminates by definition are from less than sterile procedure or contaminated spores so thank you for stating the obvious, the idea is to decrease the chances of something growing and overtaking the mycelium like giving bacteria or some other type of mold optimum growth conditions when it is not necessary or beneficial.

If you've done it wrong, incubator or not, you're going to have contams. Be clean, sterile, follow a procedure, and you'll be fine. :thumbup:
