What's the secret to not drinking?
    #11117734 -

How can some people only have 2-3 drinks socially and stop right there? What is your secret?

Ive tried everything to quit. Cold turkey, weaning, benzos, not buying it, consuming only beer(no liquor, wine, etc), sweats, workouts, liver detoxifying, psilocybin, lsd, not going to bars, etc, etc, etc.

I am so pathetic I want to kill myself. Everyone else knows it too.

Im no longer on month long binges; but like Ill make it like half a week to a week tops and then Ill buckle.
It's always when someone(a heavy drinker) offers to hang out. I go over there with full knowledge of whats gonna happen(this is probably where I fuck up). They persuade me into having one drink. Before I know it I am TANKED and I black out.

It's sick and I hate myself for it. I try so hard not to drink. It sounds fucking easy "just dont drink" why the fuck cant I resist it?

I drank on monday the 7th; I was able to make it all the way until Tuesday the 15th when a friend offered me beer. I ended up drinking a case(split between 2 of us) that night; and a case the next night. I only intended on having a couple and I drank about 18+. The next day I also drank more of the case than he did; and I chugged the rum.

I detoxed, sweat, etc. I made it until Tuesday the 22nd and I fucked up again. I was driving by and I saw my friend at the liquor store. I thought Id "pop in and say hi"; idiot me. I go in there he's all "hey man Im buying a 40" so I say well heck they are on sale Ill get a couple tallboys. I buy the tallboys go back to his place and drink with him. Another friend of his comes over and talks about getting a 12 pack. I offer to drive him there thinking "I cant let him walk" but really Im thinking "well Ive already got 2 in me; no harm". I end up drinking 7 of those.

What's the secret to not drinking? Im not having month long binges anymore but I DONT WANT TO DRINK AT ALL.

I do not enjoy being wasted (every time I drink I get wasted; I try limiting but it doesn't work), I dont enjoy being drunk, I dont enjoy being around drunk people and I dont even like being mildly buzzed.

When I first started drinking I drank to get rid of social anxiety but I dont have that anymore. It's like I have this certain thirst that only a cold beer can quench. It's like I go on autopilot as soon as I have that ONE drink and by the end of the night Im sloshed.

Again; as I said; I dont buy it anymore. It's usually my "friends" who buy me free booze so that they can have someone along to validate their own drinking. I dont even ask them; I am usually hesitant first and they give me the whole "oh c'mon you can have one" like youve seen in the movies.

Ive already made it SOME ground; I used to drink 1/4 keg + 3 40ozs + pint of gin + half a box of wine in a night and still be standing in the morning.(not counting sips I bummed off other people's drinks)

Im willing to do whatever it takes to quit for good. Should I cut off my friendships with these people? I know I cant even be around alcohol or I drink it.

sounds like a very high dose of an entheogen of some sort could help you sort some stuff out.
hallucinogens can help people beat addiction by letting them analyze their behavior from a radical perspective

After I get mildy buzzed I want to drink all the alcohol and if there is no more I want to buy more.

Also; the entheogen approach doesnt work for me. Im impervious to it from tripping weekly during regular alcohol abuse.

AA + completely changing your circle of friends

BTW How did you fit that much liquid in your system?? - you are talking about 615 oz of beer alone. Plus another 50 of wine.  I couldn't do that with water.

I dont like it anymore either. I feel like Im poisoning myself the whole time. I dont even like being buzzed. Id also rather smoke a bowl any day.

My slowing down shows that I am "getting to that point" I think where I WILL quit; it's just a matter of how. Id like to do whatever it takes to never drink again. I wish I could pay $20 for a magic pill that would make me never drink again.

I used to drink 15 cans every 2-3 days for years, started having an amphetamine binge once a week to once a fortnight and it turned me right off it. Within 6 months i wasn't drinking at all, it just didn't taste the same anymore and i didn't find it enjoyable

I never got hooked on speed, and i don't take it at all anymore.

I dont know how I did it. I had a Big Gulp cup that I filled up and chugged about 5 times.
1/4 keg was over exaggeration.

I had 100s of ozs of liquid through my system that day (started in the morning through till the am hours)

all I had that day was booze; no water; nothing. I pissed alot.

I wasnt imagining it.

I drink gallons of water in a day.

dude.  what the fuck?  that's like the iron man of drinking.  if i drank a quarter of that, i'd probably get alcohol poisoning and puke my guts out.  i feel like you have to literally train yourself to be able to drink that much.

and if you're able to drink that much, then why the fuck does one beer put you into autopilot?  if you've got a tolerance like that, one beer shouldn't have any effect whatsoever on your inhibitions.  i don't really have any advice, because i can't even begin to comprehend your problem.  but goddamn that's a shitton of alcohol.  i personally enjoy alcohol, but it's to the extent of like 2-4 beers a night and 2-4 drunken weekend evenings.  but even those drunken weekend evenings rarely end in me getting too out of control or blacking out or anything.

Yeah, I used to drink too much and I knew I wasn't in control.

One night, something spoke to me and told me that if I did not make a drastic change then I would lose everything.

I could feel the future dereliction in the air.

Well the next day was just like any other day, except I went to an NA meeting, since I was also having problems with pain medicine and coke.

I went to the meetings religiously for a couple of years (but no, I did not push my agenda on anyone) and then I stayed clean on my own for a couple of years.

I was lucky to have the love of a good woman and I think that helped me to stay happy and serene for the most part.

Of coarse after being clean for nearly four years, I was having mixed feelings about my desire to cut loose.

I didn't know if I was trying to fool myself into falling into the same patterns.

I think that vantage point was exactly what I needed, because for the past three years or so I have very rarely drank too much.

I have some kind of aversion to alcohol now that I never had in my youth.

I used to have a few beers, get a buzz and feel good, then slam beers until I was sick.

Nowadays I have a few beers, get a buzz and feel good, and I get the feeling that it will not get any better from that point.  I have just been freed from the urge to overdo it.

It's probably just a typical negative reinforcement situation.  I like to get stupid drunk, but I hate the hangover so I do what I must to avoid it.

That's what I did for awhile.

A lot of folks might think that would suck balls or w/e, but I look back on that time of my life with very fond memories.

It was an exciting time to be sober after I had been a very unsuccessful drug abuser for 10 years.

I'm not trying to push the program on anyone though.

I hate to say it, because it seems so totally unfair and wrong (to me anyway), but it sure sounds to me like the folks who have said AA and stop hanging out with your friends are absolutely right.

You see a buddy with a drink in hand, you get blacked out wasted.  Pretty simple.

If you're successful, maybe you'll be able to drink responsibly someday.  But maybe not:sorry:

i think although it sounds crappy, the best way to stop drinking is to forget about it. Even though you don't drink, it appears your constantly thinking about drinking. or trying not to drink. Constantly being worked up about it will get you down. like you're experiencing.

Bye the way. If those are you're real friends they wont serve you alcohol or offer it to you. If they do there not real friends because they help you into the gutter.

Alcohol is a nast nasty addiction. eventually you have to get used of the fact that people drink around you. But if it only offers grief and disgust in you. you will have no motivation to ask for a glass. When you forget about the whole routine of drinking is when you are cured. but you can never drink again. this is how i quit smoking successfully. stop thinking about it.

good luck!

No secret... It's called manning up.

I used to drink like a retard too, until one day you just realize it better in moderation.

Personally, the OP sounds like an alcoholic, and should probably avoid booze alltogether. But, figuring out for yourself that moderation really is the key to fun drinking.

Buy better beer too... Have one or two 11% barleywines instead of 10 piss waters.

Respect the brew!!

Exactly what I was gonna say. If you aren't buying shitty gas station beer, it's a hell of a lot harder to put back 18+ bottles.

Most of the beers I like have such strong flavor, that it usually takes at least an hour to finish a pint or two.

Forgetting about it helps me not to go out and seek it; but doesnt help when I come across it.

Thanks Swifty for the good advice; Ill try it. I actually had 6 months in NA before and 2 months in AA at a different time.

I used to be a big beer connoisseur and buy the high quality shit until I drank myself into poverty.

Changing your drink of choice will NOT help you.  That is a cliche error in reasoning.  99% of the people you will run into in AA will tell you they tried that.

It does not work.

Unfortunately if you want to quit  - you have to quit . And you have to be serious about it - because the necessary steps are not fun. BUT sounds like neither is your life.

And you only get one. This is it. Don't waste it.

Then you clearly have no control, and should probably stop taking drugs. It's a shitty answer, and most likely not what you want to hear...

Drug use is (SHOULD BE) serious business, and some people simply can't handle it. Nothing personal against you... but some people can't drink milk, some can't eat shrimp, and some can't handle alcohol properly.

In the course of this thread - just a few short hours you've gone from "I'm willing to do anything" to "I THINK this is the end of my drinking" .

Until you are really REALLY ready to quit you won't be able to.  Unfortunately you cant do it in small steps - that doesn't work.

I'm not saying you should stop drinking - as long as you are having fun go for it. That's the point.  BUT IF you do feel like its no longer fun and you can't stop the merry go round then you can not take baby steps - its all or nothing.

Your telling me a human being can drink 57 drinks in one night? I don't know if that is humanly possible. I'm a big dude and we have a bunch of big dudes in my fraternity and maybe 15-20 beers in one night will lead to a black out bad night. Your proposing three times that.

Either your some type of inhuman machine with a serious problem or you blacked out after the 10th beer and thought you were drinking the rest of the night...

Either way the trick to killing your addiction is some positive thinking and self empowerment. If you see yourself as this weak person who can't overcome it, then that's how its going to play out.

When you walk into an AA meeting or a rehab, asking for help, and you say "I need help with this and I'm willing to do anyting" they are going to respond with "Stop drinking and taking drugs".  You can't then say "Oh, well, except for that". Its not easy.

I think alot of times we are addicted to getting fucked up  - not just one substance.

AND there is NOTHING unique about your situation.  They have all been there, seen that, done that x10

You would be VERY surprised to see how much some people can drink... It does seem inhuman. :yesnod:

If someone (an alcoholic) builds up a large tolerance to alcohol on top of an already tough genetic tolerance... They can drink insane amounts of alcohol. INSANE AMOUNTS.

It's kinda like oxy pills... people with huge tolerance can EASILY gobble up what would kill a normal person without their body pitching a fit (puking).

In my heyday, I would easily drink 20+ bottles of Miller Lite at a party along with shots... On my 21st birthday I drank 30+ drinks and threatened to beat up my karate instructor.

Haha, the last person you would want to pick a fight with? I gave up my 3 night a week drinking. I would turn into such an asshole when I was blackout. I knew I had a problem when I was harpooning pool sticks at bars. Alcohol can be such a great drug in the right dosage, but most people can never get that right. Overall I think our planet would be better without it.

Beeing an alcoholic really has NOTHING  to do with the quantities involved. If you can drink all nightlong, get the shakes, puke , cry, piss yourself AND STILL have fun and support yourself,  and if you have a family  - keep them happy and fullfilled,  then you DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM.

And sometimes its a trade off - getting drunk to have fun can be worth the pain of a hangover just as a big mountain big ride can be worth the soreness and tiredness that results.

BUT

If you are unhappy and not having fun, then you need to stop. Even if you are just drinking 3 winecoolers once a week.  If those 3 winecoolers are hurting the aspects of your life you don't want hurt , stop.

And if you can't stop  - and you want to - go ask for help.

Real help.

I could never stop myself at 2 or 3 drinks either. Once I had a taste, it was over.

For me, I just had to stop completely. Don't go to bars, don't hang out with other people that drink, don't go places that have alcohol. Period. If you do those things, you are setting yourself up to fail. No alcoholic has the willpower to be hanging around drunk people and be able to stay sober.  If you can't do it on your own then get yourself in an AA meetup. Drinking is not worth hating yourself and wanting to die. You have to help yourself.

Alcohol would fucking DESTROY me if I abused it. I do not drink to the point of loosing my bearings. I rarely drink at all. I have a bigger problem holding my milk, than my booze.

I'm living your dream of moderation. I typically drink one glass a week on average, so 4-5 in a month. I'm 36 years old. Me drinking more than ten glasses of alcohol in a sitting? That happened four or five times in my life.

1-5 glasses, thats it for me.

I drink for flavor, and a mild intoxication. I have a bottle of delicious high-end Absinthe. Stupid-expensive absinthe. What Were You Thinking-expensive. I can afford it; it will last me several years. I drink one glass at most and savor the shit out of it. Finish my glass, I'm done.

I think what happens to you is that you give yourself effective excuses to let gluttony take over.  "If so and so, then to hell with it"

I have that a bit with MDMA. Put a gram in front of me right now, and tomorrow at the same time come back and there isn;'t a milligram left, just an elatedly grinning obese guy who obviously hasnt slept, showered or eaten in 24 hours :yesnod: I wouldnt even regret it properly, nor would I have gotten sick. (2-3 days after is another story tho)

My solution: theres not a milligram of MDMA in my house, unless its intended for immediate consumption. I don't seek out connections for it.

I took it last, at christmas and I'm skipping a year so only around next christmas will I and my friends imbide again.

I think I'm about 2 ounces away from the point where MDMA's benefits will outweigh the negatives, and plan to stretch that.

What you should do is tell you friends you love them and all, but that you';ll avoid them if any kind of drinking is involved. Alcohol is destroying you, continue on this path and you'll turn into a sickly tard. Brain damage, a ton of ailments all at once.

Avoid drinking situations, break the abuse pattern. Its one of the hardest things that can be asked of you but if you do, you saved your life. The ante is high but so is the reward.

AA can help, but in the end its you who has to do the work and say to yourself:
THIS IS DESTROYING ME, I WON'T DRINK A SINGLE GLASS EVER AGAIN.

I don't believe in moderation with your drinking, or my smoking. If you quit, quit 100%.

Good advice; Ill do that.

I made it a couple months earlier this year without drinking. I felt entirely disgusted with myself when I fell off that horse and started binging again.

Ive never tried real absinthe; but I reckon I dont need to.

Whats up buddy, I wish you the best of luck.
I myself was heavy into drinking. It has caused me to loose jobs
possessions, friends even family. My drinking even caused me and my wife
to split up after 5 years.

I too couldnt just stop at 1 beer
I would get a 30 pack of cheap ass beer drink half of that and
still want more. So I would drive(i know not smart)to get more.

After that was gone I would find myself still wanting more.
It took me going to prison(alcohol related)before I realized I needed
to change something.I had some time to really think about my life and
where it was headed.Plus I have 2 little kids, I thought about their future as well.

All the money I have spent drinking, I could only imaging
what they would have if I had saved some of that money.
Not to mention I have 2 DUI's and have not had a license since 03.

Trust me when I say you need to stop.I know its hard but it can be done
you might have to stop hanging around your"friends"who drink all the time.

Maybe even a change of location.
I have personally found meetings
didnt work for me. All the talking about drinking made me want to do it even more. But they do work for some.

If you ever need to talk Im there for ya man

Do you not drink a while and then go on uncontrollable binges?

If so, if I were you I would go and visit a doctor. It sounds just like my grandfather who hada tad of bipolar disorder (a.k.a manic depression). He'd be fine for days then go on a month long binge. Everything he tried to stop drinking just went straight out of the window when he got really down.

It ended up killing him (health problems).

I know I cant even be around alcohol or I drink it.

you are an alcoholic.

Good luck OP. I have a long history with booze, and a lot of these stories and comments in this thread hit home. I quit drinking myself about 3 months ago which has been my longest dry run in almost two decades. The funny thing is, I haven't had any really terrible episodes in years, with the exception of a few hangovers, but I got pretty sick of drinking 5-10 beers a day, every single day without fail.

I really envy those who are able to moderate, but I am not one of them. It is much easier for me to not drink at all than to impose some arbitrary limit, because eventually I will derail . . . always have. I sure do miss delicious beer though

Good luck to all of those that struggle with booze.

While this is very true, its bad advice in this situation because he is already aware its a problem.

I dont know what to say man. I started only having a glass of wine a night because I was sick of the effects from over drinking. The hangover the next day, lack of control, inability to function.....are all reasons why I drink in moderation. That and constant acid reflux from growing up and throwing up due to alcohol have gave me an ulcer in my esophagus. Now every time my acid reflux acts up I have minor stabbing pain in my throat/chest area

Its funny but all the times I made major life changes was when I had a metaphorical gun to my head.

I decided school was important once I was shipped a thousand miles away from home and placed in a bootcamp type environment where school was how you earned your freedom.

I decided maybe drugs should be used in Moderation when I was placed on probation and not allowed to have any drugs or risked jail time

I decided moderation with alcohol was important once I noticed a few health problems

I changed my view on how "important" the psychedelic experience really is; once I started noticing how weird my thoughts/world views were getting.

I noticed how important it is to control your women, once I realized girls have no idea what the fuck they are doing and need a man to dominate and make sure they dont run their lifes/relationship into the ground

Dont wait until your life has serious consequences emerging in order to change shit. HOwever if thats what it takes.....theres nothing wrong with that :yesnod: but your gonna have to pick up the pieces. Dont wait until you get a DUI or need a liver transplant to change your ways.

Good luck, I have faith in you. You would be surprised how motivating fear can be :onfire:....but allowing yourself to be motivated by good intentions is allot better/enjoyable than fear :bliss:

BTW,  Check these links

studies are showing Topiramate can block excess dopamine from alcohol consumption

http://alcoholism.about.com/cs/meds/a/aa030517.htm

Quote:
The study involved 103 alcoholics over a three month period. Of the 103 heavy drinkers, 55 were given topiramate, while 48 were given a placebo. Both groups received counseling throughout the trial. The results of the study included:

After 3 months, 13 out of the 55 in the topiramate group, or 24 percent, had abstained continuously for a month. Only two out of 48 in the placebo group, or 4 percent, had a month sober.
In the topiramate group, 28 out of 55, or 50 percent, did not binge in the final month, compared with eight out of 48, or 16 percent, of those taking the placebo. Those taking the drug were nearly four times less likely to binge.
Half of the topiramate group reported less craving for alcohol, compared to a 15 percent in the placebo group.

I believe it is non prescription and you can buy it online or in some pharmacies

Also if the herb high will help you not drink, try some JWH-018 if you havent already, its cheap as hell, easy to get, safe (going by current research) and JUST like a weed high

My only advice on the subject though is this, if you are serious about trying to quit something then you have to commit 100% and just tell yourself, fuck this I dont want to poison myself there are much better ways to feel good that arent killing you on the inside

Once again, Good luck.

Agreed.

I'm very sensitive to alcohol, so I don't need to drink much at all to enjoy myself. Four beers is usually where I like to be.

If I don't pay attention to the amount I consume then I'll get way too drunk and end up puking all night. It took several experiences before I started to realize this, but it's motivated me to pay attention to how much I drink, and not get stupid drunk.

Yes; I am diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

I ignore the diagnosis unless someone specifically inquires; I dont like to pigeon hole myself.

Those assholes do though, fuck them!
But I find the key to not drinking a lot is to only buy a little bit, or none at all.

This is my first post in this thread
I have dealt with a lot of seemingly hopeless drug addicts in my time
personally, I have seem to come to the conclusion that:

no amount of denial is going to stop an addiction.

The only way to to get past it is to fill that hole with something more fulfilling.

There are a ton of things better than being drunk. Find one, and do that

a person who has been smoking cigarettes for 50 years doesn't quit because they tell themselves not to smoke
they quit because they want to be alive to see their children for as long as they can. That is more fulfilling

That is why I don't do xanax and coke all day (for examples sake, plus I don't have a very addictive personality, but this is how I see it). Not because I tell myself not to, but because I feel so much more alive not doing that than I would if I were all trashed like that.

you need to find something that really makes you feel alive, instead of something that covers the fact that you don't

:2cents:

(this does not apply to moderate drinking, only abuse)
