they will burst thier shell as they expand, yes. you'll notice after 30 min or so the bird seed rising and taking up more space. Add water as necessary. Thats if you choose to go that route

ya, but i find to boil about an hour most effective. 30 min is sometimes too shy. Also strain for like 20 min and try to shake off as much extra dripping as possible. thats one of the simplist and cheapest ways i've found.

I had to add that I've made Milo/millet only batches and they are just NOT as good as the WBS with corn, sunflower seeds, all of it..
The main thing to consider with ingredients is probably moisture content.. Which is why people generally prefer Rye because you can develop a uniform consistent moisture content with it...

WBS should be simmered NOT boiled. Follow Doc's WBS tek. http://www.shroomery.org/9030/Docs-Wild-Bird-Seed-Tek
I use it and my Mycelium growth kicks ass. The moisture should be inside the seeds. If they burst, there IS no inside...
The cheaper seed does not have as many types of seed in it, this is good. I purchase a no name brand from Ace hardware that's composed primarily of milo and millet. It's awesome.

I always boil WBS and have had np. Its really up to personal preference. There are several ways to prepare Bird Seed. Boiling has always worked for me
Heres some pics of boiled WBS before pressure cooked.. Noticed the Bird seed has burst..

excuse the poor lighting. Heres some more

mine pops sometimes but it can be a problem when you shake because the seeds rip apart and you get a gooey mess in the jar

i would like to take the time to let it soak overnight to obtain moisture the problem is that im in a rush, i can only use the pc tomorrow so i dont have the time to let it soak properly. so i would like to try the boiling method because i can whip that up in the morning. i am definitely going to use the feel funny family tek when i get the chance to make more. i just dont own a pc and my buddy has a really busy schedule so im gonna have to try and take the short route on this one

Quick rinse, boil until it stops being crunchy (but before it gets mushy). Do it all in 30 minutes. Drain another 30 or so, then jar it up and start your run. It's not ideal, but it will work.
Or weigh out 240 grams of WBS and 120 grams of water per qart jar, and just PC it like that. Shake it when it comes out, it'll work ok. Again, not ideal.

I've bought 3 or 4 different brands and all of them have worked. It's really a matter of technique rather than brand. It's about making sure they soak, and then it's about making sure you got them dry enough.
While I don't think anyone else is doing it I have recently started using my slow cooker on it's simmer setting. The temp gets up around 130 to 150 with occasional stirring to even it out. I put exactly enough for one autoclave bag into my slow cooker, fill it with water up to the top and let it sit for 4 hours. Then I turn the thing off and forget about it for the night, the day, whatever. This of course is the inverse of what is usually recommended. Also, removing sunflower seeds beyond the floaters is a waste of time.

boiling or simmering is kind of a waste of time,
if you pc you WBS for 90 minutes you'll be fine just shake the jars when they are cool enough to handle and there will be less chance of wet spots
