North East 'Bama Finds
    #11112673 - 09/23/09 03:24 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Habitat: Found these in some woods that are in walking distance. They were growing out of soil (one was found on what looks like a makeshift grave for some kind of pet, nevertheless it was soil. bad luck?)

I can post more information if needed. If I post the pictures do I need to give the other info? Thanks.

Also, I'm not just going out a picking everything and bringing it to you guys in hopes of it being active. I've taken an interest in shrooms and I hope to be able to be an accurate identifier over time. So tips to point me in that direction would be awesome as well

Here are the finds:

I'll make prints if any of them might be active/edible.

The one in the bottom right picture looks to me like some sort of Amanita, but it's hard to tell which one with the fuzzy picture. Taking some pictures of the gills would also help people give you an I.D. along with some more info.

The Amanita amerirubescens is edible if well cooked, and the Amanita flavoconia is also probably edible.

The Lactarius is probably too peppery to eat.

The bolete looking thing may be edible and good.

None are active.

Thanks for the IDs man. I really appreciate. Think I might go fry me some beer-battered shrooms =)

Have any tips towards becoming a GREAT mycologist?

Try to ID every mushroom you can find.  Post the pictures on http://mushroomobserver.org, then [img] include the pics in your post here.

I learned most of what I know by editing wikipedia articles on mushrooms.  Its a good way to learn.

I concur that giving yourself a project that requires you to describe and understand a species is a good way to learn about it.  About 20 more years of projects and I might be able to identify half of what Alan can!
