Drying advice for fellow newbs
    #1111250 - 12/04/02 07:32 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

Just wanted to pass along an error I made which cost me a harvest - I harvested a casing in the morning, had to get to work but wanted to get them out as they were prime for harvesting, but put them in front of the fan for only about half an hour, and then into the dessicant chamber. They were too wet for that, and the dessicant wasn't enough to dry them like that, and when I returned that night I found a chamber full of rotting shrooms :frown:  Lesson learned - dry well in front of the fan before depositing into the dessicant chamber. Good thing they grow like, well, mushrooms....

I did the same thing... with only one shroom though.
That poor guy...  he turned out all blue and he just had a bad life from the get-go.  I stuck him on my ceiling fan with some tape to see if that'd work (i was just experimenting) and  ZANG, he shot off into the corner and busted his noggin and broke his stem.  I learned my lesson.

Thanks hobbit, and now a question: When fan drying, what type of surface material to you put the fruit bodies on? I'm worried about competing household molds...

I know... By that point I figured screw it, it's just one shroom, might as well keep screwing up one that wasn't too great to begin with.  It's kinda sad that my buddies' first born was put through such abuse, but the first paid the price so his siblings could dry happily.

try putting fresh san pedro cuttings in a dessicant chamber....

oops that could be disasterous

use dessicant after fanning for a couple of days

the dessicant pulls the last little bit from the object to get it nice and crispy, sucking it dry to avoid rot

Yes, I use a paper towel, although it's a good idea to turn them occasionally while drying as they will adhere a bit to the paper towel, no big deal, just a minor thing. I think aluminum foil would be good too.

They are black, simple as that, you can't miss it, and they don't smell great either. Seems like drying in front of the fan for a solid two hours is the least you want before putting them into the chamber.

if you use a fridge to dry the mush with dessicant and in an air tight container..is it still good to dry them in the open before hand before putting them in the container in the fridge?
