beating green mold. Shooms still good? PIC
    #1110814 - 12/04/02 05:25 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Okay here is the situation:
I started with 6 pints of rye grain that colonized with cambodian spores. One was kinda shaky lookin so I set it aside the rest looked. I had some old dung brothers compost from way back when they were endorced by the hawks eye and never had a problem. I mixed up about 7 lbs and left it in my closet for 2 weeks. everything was looking good until I had an emergency and had to wheel off the DBkit, when it was 90% colonized. Then when I was able to put light on it a week later it was okay for a few days then I noticed some different looking bubbly mycelia that turned green after a few days.
I would say the green occupies 5-10% of the entire thing, but the casing is already fruiting with normal healthy lookin goomies. The shrooms are only growing on white mycelia, and NO growth on the green.
I tried cutting out the green when I first saw it, however it regrew covering the cut out area. I have sence covered the area with a rubbing alcohol soaked paper towel. I want to know if there is anything elso to do, and if the growing shrooms are safe for the green mold, and the rubbing alcohol?

You can't stop it, it won't let you. The spores to the mold are probably within the mycelial network around the contam. Harvesting the mushrooms and eating them could be a problem since the mold may be toxic.

I have read somewhere about someone who had the same contam and asked a friend who was in college and was learning about the stuff and sais it was just a common house mold and was harmless. So the person ate the shrooms and everything went ok. I dont recomend you eat them, just sharing the story.

Hey, I'm no mold expert but I dont think a little would kill you. Dont restaurants give us moldy cheese and stuff all the time?? I believe so. I would test a incospicious amount, definately less then a gram, and see if they are ok. But be careful, dont give them to anyone else!!!

Peace

ok iloveraving ... that made sense. "Take them yourself but don't give them to anyone else"??? That kinda defeats the purpose of you even posting in the first place. Don't even eat a little. A little is all it takes for a bacteria/contamination to kill you. A little could turn into a lot within your system (yes, contamination can live/grow in your system if your immune system can't beat it). Next thing you know you're in the hospital. DON'T EAT THEM. ITS NOT WORTH IT MAN. JUST BE MORE CAREFUL/STERILE NEXT TIME.

Once again, I suggest harvesting them and giving them to a close enemy.

I think the ppicture makes it look worse than it really is. The rest of the case is ok, and if shrooms grow off of the ok shit I dont see a problem. But at leaast I have some Puerto Ricans in a shoe box.

That mould is definitely trichoderma.
Trichoderma has been proven to be completely harmless to humans:
http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/fung-nemat/tcmtb-ziram/trichoderma/fung-prof-trichoderma.html
So theoretically you could eat them and come to no harm. But I wouldn't.

an exerpt from the link that zeta posted:
(the paper is a little long)

The species Trichoderma does not grow at temperatures above 28
degrees C and is not capable of growth in warm blooded animals or birds.
The proposed use patterns for the products would not expose aquatic
wildlife to the fungi. The fungi are not pathogenic to plants or
insects. Trichoderma species are naturally occurring in soils throughout
the world.

Acute effects:

- Acute oral toxicity (mice):  The acute oral LD50 toxicity of TUF (an
extract from the Trichoderma strains) was greater than 4,000 mg/kg
after 1 and 14 days. The acute oral and subcutaneous LD50 toxicities
of trichodermin (antibiotic) in mice were greater than 1,000 mg/kg and
  500-1,000 mg/kg respectively.
- Hypersensitivity study (Guinea pig):  No sensitization occurred when
Guinea pigs were dermally exposed to Trichoderma spores.
- Other Toxicity Testing:  Additional toxicity testing was waived based
upon submission of data or information:
  1. which indicated that the fungi do not grow at or near the body
    temperatures of mammals or birds.
  2. which demonstrated that no toxins or antibiotics were produced in
    simulated use situations.
  3. which showed that exposure to Trichoderma strains has occurred in
personnel working with the fungi for times of up to 18 years with
    no adverse toxicological effects.
  4. which provides the criteria used to determine the extent to which
formulated preparations are free from contaminating microorganisms.
  5. which confirmed the exempt status of certain inert ingredients.

Great link zeta thanks

So is it possible to stop the growth of trichoderma by raising the temperature to about 30 degrees C? I know thats a little high for good fruiting, but if I were to do that could I possibly get a few decent fruits off of a contaminated casing before it is overun?

Obviously if a fruit is covered with mold, toss it to avoid an allergic reaction.  However, if the fruits are not moldy, eat them.
