Lagochilis Inebrians- Intoxicating Mint- Turkish Mint
    #11074305 - 09/17/09 12:48 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Haven't posted in the garden in a while.  I was uploading a pic for another member and figured I'd share this rarity.
One of my lagochilis inebrians grown from seed.  They were planted with the seed point down. The soil is good compost.  I have only been using window light, which I attribute to the thin stem.  I've just been to afraid to put them outside.  Eventually, they will go under lights.

No. It's an herb.  It would be thicker if grown outdoors or in more light and should stand upright.  It's just got a weak stem so it's been laying along the ground. Once I put it under lights I hope for it to thicken up. It's an easy plant to kill, so I hesitated to put it outdoors and let it keep going in the low light.  I'm pretty sure I can make it work though.  I have others as well.

Bwah. These are seemingly quite hard to find! Try to get that guy in some real light so he perks up and flowers.  We need some people with seeds in the US.  Don't make me go to Uzbekistan and break all sorts of international laws regarding the transport of soil and plants... cause you know I will.

Hairy mints grow wild, here, and we're on the border of a desert with compacted clay.

Photos of Lagochilus' native habitat look familiar to me, in Southern California.

I could imagine it naturalizing in my yard.

I'm within earshot of the I-10, between LA and Vegas.

~ 2700ft elevation, between the desert plants of Death Valley and temperate scrub oak.

After a long walk, I can barely see ski lifts, from beneath Big Bear.

Cold wind occasionally sinks down from snowy mountain tops, but we mostly get hot air and windblown sand from the desert.

USDA says we're zone 9. It does get cold, but freezes are infrequent.

I put it just under an incandescent bulb for the time being.  It looks like they got a little greener.  Eventually, I plan to give them flouros.

Having tried several batches of seeds, in different conditions, I'm rapidly losing faith in anything that doesn't look like a vigorous plant.
