ID Request - WA Boletus Edulis
    #11103372 - 09/21/09 09:48 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I went on a hike today in Olympic National Park and found what I hope to be Boletus Edulis. I checked both my mushroom ID books and nothing else looks close besides Boletus Edulis.

Location: Found on side of foot trail near river in Olympic National Park. About 20 miles from coast, elevation near 500 feet.

Habitat: Found in soil in old growth forest - Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock, some Douglas Fir.  These were under Spruce.

Pores: Whitish

Stem: Whitish, to creamish, some reticulation, larger near base.

Cap: Light Brown to yellowish at margin several inches for younger specimens, nearly a foot in diameter for mature specimens.

Spore print color: Haven't printed yet.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

I have 3 pictures to post and can take more if it is needed (I picked 2 of the younger mushrooms)

Pics 1 and 2 were in the same patch of about 6 mushrooms.  The mushroom in pic 3 was found growing by itself about a mile from the first patch.

Cool! Thanks guys!

I just sauteed a few slices in butter and garlic, they were pretty darn tasty.  Assuming I don't have any adverse reactions, I'll be having an Edulis omelet for brekfast tomorrow morning

Sounds scrumdidlyumptious. Do you remove the pores when you cook them? I know some people don't, but that seems icky. I've never cooked a bolette.

I've been finding a ton of Suillus lately, and have been tempted to experiment, but am kinda new to eating wild edibles and am also kind of a pussbag.

I cooked them with the pores, there isn't much flesh left after cooking them, so I don't think removing the pores would be the best idea as you wouldn't have much to eat.

They tasted good with the pores on there and they have a cool texture too.

are you kidding? Kings are on of the most fleshy edibles. The stem is where most of the meat is and its goood. leave the pores unless the're wormy

My breakfast today, Edulis Omelet:

Heres the recipe for anyone interested

Heat pan with several tablespoons of butter at slightly over medium heat.

Add several cloves of crushed garlic and allow to cook for a minute or so.

Add sliced Boletus Edulis, enough to cover most of the bottom of pan.  Cook until bottom side of mushroom slices turn golden brown, then flip each slice once and allow to cook for another minute or so.

Remove the crushed garlic chunks from the pan (Trust me you will still be able to taste the garlic in there) and add the eggs (I used 3) that you beat with several tablespoons of milk, some salt, pepper and seasoning while the mushrooms were cooking. Reduce heat to slightly below medium.

Let the eggs cook for several minutes until the top layer starts to solidify, it helps to pick up and spin the liquid top layer around the edge of the omelet on the hot pan every once and a while to help it cook faster and avoid burning the omelet.

Once the top is no longer runny, its time to add shredded cheese, I used pepper jack.  Let the cheese start to melt a bit, I then added chunks of half a small avocado to the omelet.

Then comes the delicate part, you must pick up the pan and slide about 1/3 of the omelet off the pan then use a spatula to help fold the omelet without breaking it. Let it cook for another minute or so until cheese starts oozing out of the omelet.

Put it on a plate and enjoy!

It was seriously delicious.

Good to the last bite!

Enjoy!

Thanks again for confirming the ID guys!

Me too. I keep finding potential edibles, even good ones, and I always worry about a galerina being mixed in with the bunch.

I don't mean that type of pussbag. I just mean that I lived all my life with a distaste for edible mushrooms and now I am beginning to enjoy them slowly but surely.

I just don't have the balls to start eating big soggy Suillus'. I have fried up some yummy Marasmius oreades in garlic butter though.

And unless you haven't done any research, there aren't any edibles that really resemble Galerina. A few actives, yeah, but even those are easy enough to distinguish with a little field experience or research.
