bubbler theories
    #1110332 - 12/04/02 03:04 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

okay so I recently purchased a bubbler with two outlets and two diffuser stones. I put two holes in the top of a h202 bottle and stuck the ends with the diffuser stones into the water. I made another hole in the top portion of the bottle with the end going into the air above the bubbling water and put o hold in the bottom of my terrarium to stick that through. There was condesation on the tube so I am sure the air being pumped in was humid. I filled the bottle with h202 and hot water so the air being pumped in would be warm and even more humid although my house is cold so it cools quickly. IT seemed as if my humidity was less when I added the bubbler. I thought this could be because my house is dry so the air it's sucking in is not as good so I place the entire bubbler into the terrarium with the h202 bottle and tubes and all. This raised my temps to about 78 which is where I wanted them (too cold before). I also think it will help because all the air that it is intaking will already be humid. Anyway, this was only one method I found because there was another idea that the bubble tubes should go directly into a jar or cup of water with the diffuser stones on the submerged ends of the tubes. Which is better and why do people do different methods. I just picked one that seemed effective but have even modified it (placing it in the terrarium) a bit. What's your opinion?

also are bubblers used more for humidity sake or air exchange because I forgot that there is now no fresh air being pumped in which may be worse since the consensus so far seems to be that I have too much humidity although based on the information in the MMGG I'm not sure.

I have a bubbler for air exchange, perlite for humidity....
My bubbler run 1 hour on , 1 hour off. One rock in 600ml water bottle + some H2O2. Works for me
Peace

i have my air pump and my h202 jar oustside the terrarium and i just put a tube connecting the two. it works good for me. makes the air humid and brings in some fresh air too, but you still got to fan manually like 2-3 times a day so to much pressure doesnt build up.

run it as long as it takes to get the right rh.

i bubble into a flat baking dish instead of a cup-shaped thing. this provides much much more surface area for humidity. i also put in perlite which floats on the surface creating a bumpier water suface which also increases humidity.

do you run the tube with the stones straight into the chamber with the dish or bubbler it outside and put the tub in to bubble the tray?

outside of rubbermaid chamber is timer and air pump. pump pushes air through tubes. tubes enter chamber and connect to stones in dish filled with water/h202/perlite.

I ran a bubbler 24-7 and it seemed to do quite well I will always run a bubbler in mine.. H20 and H202 I didn't really pay attention to the ratios, I would add about a liter of water and a capfull of h202

cool thanks. Do you think that would provide more humidity than the way mine is set up? also do you run yours all day or on a timer. It seems more and more like people use it more for air exchange than as a humidity booster.

i toss in some h2o2 whenever i think about it. i'm not picky about the amount. you can't have too much but you may have too little. my bubbler handles both humidity and air exchange.

does the bubbler cut back on humidity though?

no, it increases it. that's why i cut back my time from 24/7 to every 15 minutes. too much humidity.

oh that's why people keep them on a timer. So It's not the bubbler I have to worry about causing too much humidity? maybeI will try that pan setup with the perlite sounds like it would get more humidity going.

i live in a very dry place and it works well for me. maybe in a less dry place it would be too much humidity, but then i'd just have it bubble less often. my pan is a pyrex (glass) baking dish about 4 inches deep and 6 inches x 8 inches wide if that helps.

If you have two airlines feeding into the bubbler, you want plenty of exits in the bottle- drill more holes in the shoulder of the bottle and/or leave the capoff.

>is it okay to run the bubbler all day?
Then I ran my bubbler for about 4 hours, a lot of the condensation had disappeared, about half of the droplets on the sides were gone. I live in a relatively dry place and it was drying it out pretty fast. I only leave it on about 20 minutes about 5 times a day.

I think it all depends on the RH where you live. There's no magic number. If it's looking dry, bubbler less and mist. If it's getting too wet, bubbler more, mist less.

why would more exits help. I think I am going to switch it to the pan setup. It's sound like it would work better.

>but dude, everyone is saying that a bubbler adds humidity.

It does add humidity....to the air from your room that's going to be pumped into your terrarium. That air isn't 100% humid. It's probably not even 85%. Anyone have a hygrometer that can measure the RH in the room and the RH from the air coming out of the bubbler?

the air that is being pumped in is already humid because it bubbles in an h202 bottle before it goes in the tank.

i think the confusion may be in what container you are bubbling into. the container i use is a wide open pan with perlite. there is lots of water contacting the air. the bubbling action adds water to the air coming in but also vibrates the water and perlite in the pan creating more humidity.

if you bubble into a small container like a jar or glass, there isn't so much water touching the air and so the increase in humidity from the bubbler would probably be less.

the only way to tell what your set-up is going to do is to test it. compare your humidity after bubbling for a long time to not bubbling at all.

the air in my room is around 25 to 30 % rh. the air inside the chamber sits at around 90 %.

I think there needs to be more detail. First you get a aquarium air pump. Connect some airline tubing to a diffuser stone and put in through a hole in the bottle. The bottle has water or water/H2O2 in it. Then there's another hole where airline tubing is exiting the bottle and going into a terrarium or whatever needs air exchange. That's a bubbler.

my "bubbler" is an air pump connected to tubing. the tubing enters the fruiting chamber and is connected to a diffuser stone sitting in a pan of water/h2o2 with perlite floating in it. the only part outside the chamber is the air pump. there is no bubbler bottle in my set-up.
