Can temperature reach 250 on an electrical PC?
    #11098559 -

Hi, I'm reading the step on sterilizing the jars so no contamination would occur.
I see most people recommend a PC over just boiling the jars in some pot for like 90 minutes.
And that the temperature you get in a PC will well surpass 250 for sterilization than about 212 boiling pot.
Here's the thing, I saw the PF tek video and other sources that the PC is placed over a stove to work, given the PC itself is not powered by electric. But I don't have a stove and I'm planning to get an electrical powered PC, would that work? Would the temperature exceed 250 in an electrical PC?

I'm thinking about getting this one:

Thanks.

First of all, Yeah a PC is the way to go if you are planning on doing this more than once. First time I did it though I just did steam sterilization and had no contams.

Second there are cheaper used PC's on ebay and such but to each his own.

Third, That model will exceed 250 and will probably go up to 400 or so. any functional pressure cooker will exceed 250 degrees. 250 is really not that much, you oven goes up to 600 with that doinky little heating element. The heat becomes greater with pressure so you are set with that model for sure.

If just boiling it for 90 minutes is good enough then I probably won't get this for $90.
So the oven can reach 600??? Can't I just put my jars in there to sterilize???

No, the oven will not work to sterilize.

That is absolutely incorrect.  Pressure raises the boiling point of water, enabling 250F to be reached at 15 psi.  No pressure cooker goes up to 400F.

To the original poster, they don't list a pressure with that model, so I doubt it reaches 15 psi.  Most in that genera only go to 10 to 11 psi. It also looks fairly small for large grain jars, but if you're doing brf tek in 1/2 pints, it will be fine.  That's a pretty good price for an electric pressure cooker.  Be sure to keep your jars elevated on a shelf out of the water.

go to there website and email them to ask about what pressure it operates at.

Even if its 10 psi it will still work. Just cook longer.

So I found out that the PC will operate at 12 psi, so about how long do I need to cook it?

An hour after 12 PSI is reached will do.  Many guides say 30 to 45 minutes, but I prefer a full hour.  Be sure to let steam vent for a few minutes before sealing the unit.  There's probably a plug or weight you put on to get it to build steam.

The above chart shows 1 atm @ just under 15 psi. when you put something in a 15 PSI PC, the boiling point of water is calculated as: Current atmospheric pressure + PC's pressure.

While an electric PC's heating element may well exceed 400, the contents do not until its dry (or near dry). adding the additional heat will just make the water boil faster.

Now all I need is a 1000 PSI PC, and I can sterilize my jars in 3 mins flat.

I know this is an old thread but I'm no good with forums and I can't figure out how to pm you. Is it possible to do it with this model on grain in 1/2 pint jars as well? You only mentioned brf.

Question to a response please? [Re: RogerRabbit] * 1

Particularly Roger Rabbits Response….
I have a Bone Appetite 7 QT. electric  PC with a psi of 14 that I plan on using while following the PF Tek.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          I have been searching the forums, and this thread seems to answer my question as to weather I can use this PC. However, I do not understand what to do as far as "Be sure to let steam vent for a few minutes before sealing the unit.  There's probably a plug or weight you put on to get it to build steam." ? This unit won't operate unless I have the lid sealed. From what I understand, I then set the pc to high, with the timer set for one hour and 15min.
There is a Pressure release knob that I can manually choose Vent or Seal.  Do I need to use this to release steam at some point?

Thank you

that new user posted in the POP thread, only had 2 posts, so I was like, "oh how'd she end up at the shroomery.

looked and that was the other post.  "oh cool she grows"  "I'll help her out"

she's either nailed it or has a cool trich factory by now either way
