Hydra-pod question....
    #1109392 - 12/04/02 08:13 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I will be recieving my hydra-pod soon and I would like to know if there is anyway possible you can do a casing inside of it like I think I saw on the website (I think it is just crumbled up cakes formed into a dome but I really don't know). I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me how in the pictures of the hydra-pod they made that large mound that all the mushrooms grow from instead of just putting in the indiviual pints. If you could please elaborate on the process I would greatly appreciate it because it would save a lot of space.

i don't think that's a casing on the website. my experience was that humidity was always too high for a casing. i moved to a rubbermaid.

those in the pictures are just casings stacked on each other. They do this, I think, to help with moisture. If anyone else knows why else they would do this, let's hear it.

i still don't think those are casings. they appear to be cakes. they are stacked to more efficiently use the space.

Well it is one big thing and not several different things thats for sure....I'm thinking they crumbled up all the cakes like you would for a casing and just stackedem...however I'd like confirmation before I do this.

i think it's one big cake. i guess you could crumble your cakes into a container and let them grow together again but i don't see any advantage but several disadvantages to this. either way, it is not a casing though it may have some casing material stuck to it ala verm-topped cakes.

mycotek (the guy who made the pod) suggests stacking 2 pint cakes, so i'd guess he either did that or used one giant cake. one way to be sure: PM mycotek.

i have a pod. i used it to begin fruiting several cakes. after the first flush in the pod i cased them and haven't turned back since. now my pod just takes up space. an $8 rubbermaid with a $4 air pump and water/perlite do all the work now.

if i had it to do again i would have listened to the many people who say just use a rubbermaid. i'm not dissing the pod; it works great for it's purpose: growing on cakes. but you can get results that are just as good or better with a lot less money and/or doing casings which are easier in the long run, imho.

I havn't used the hydra-pod, but it seems like a self automated mushroom cultivator to me. I would like to get one, but don't wanna pay the big bux for something that Bilge says takes up space. I currently case and it seems to work for me, but if I didn't have to worry with it, it would be all the world better.

hmmm.....what about getting a large paint bucket, filling it with hydroponics, and making a cover out of a clear plastic bag.....??

I totally agree. Why pay 200 bucks for growing cakes? Casings are easier and higher yielding than cakes, and IMO, bulk is easier than casings. Buying a pod seems like a waste, at least to me.

Well I like the fact that I dont have to build anything cuz I'm lazy. I like the fact it does everything for you besides cut them down and dryem  I like the fact its pretty decent size and it is perfect for where it is going and finally I just like the damn thing.....+ I don't have bills to pay or kids to take care of so I figured why not I'm lucky for a few years but until then I'm gonna relax have fun the lazy way until I venture into the real world completely on my own. I'm young why not enjoy it to the fullest! I don't wanna be old and look back and wish I had done so many thingsthat I hadn't like a lot of older people I know  This is supposed to be a fun hobby not another job for me.
